The Guillemots are one of the highly rated bands to come out in the last few years. Described as indie rock by most, when you hear the band members are named Fyfe Dangerfield, MC Lord Magrao, Aristazabel Hawkes and the relatively standard named Greig Steward you realise these aren't a run of the mill indie band. First album proper 'Through the Windowpane' spawned four cult singles including the impeccable 'Trains to Brazil' and a mercury music nomination to boot. In fact their second favourite tag was soon a distant memory as Artic Monkeys debut scooped the honours. I bought the Guillemots album after some very positive reviews from a my dad. He was impressed and so I went out and got myself a copy. I'd already heard a bit of their stuff, and had in my head an image of some sort of weird, mixed up band doing their part for the music scene. Well I was right, but that doesn't mean they're any lesser in terms of quality. The album opens with "Kriss Kross", and in my opinion a perfect choice as an opening song. The upbeat guitar riff sets the tempo immediately, and you're certainly left with a feeling that you know what you'll be getting when the album continues. Oh how wrong you'd be. It's fair to say that some bands don't get the praise they deserve for the work they have put in and as far as their debut album was concerned the Guillemots are certainly one of those bands. Of course they have returned this year with the follow up to 2006's Through the Windowpane with the impressive Red. It has already had more radio play for its one single to date than I think the previous album got in total. That said the radio exposure has really brought the band to the attention of a much wider musical audience and as a result the first single "Get Over It" seems to be pulling in new fans from all over the place.
