Advantages: lush, melodic, great lyrics

Disadvantages: takes a while to sink in, though it's worth it when it does

A week or so ago, I posted a comment, defending another reviewer who'd described this album as 'disappointing'. I did say that at that point I'd only heard it a few times, and hoped it would grow on me. Well it has, in a big way! Never may that word 'disappointing' cross my lips again in relation to this masterpiece. Every time I hear it, it's growing on me more and more. I should've seen it coming, because thinking back, this has been my reaction to every Divine Comedy album I've bought. I always start off quite liking the odd track here and there, but not overwhelmed by it. But then one day, I'll listen to it again and wham! I'm hooked ! (No, I didn't just say I'm hooked on Wham! Heaven forbid!)

To pick out a few album highlights, Bad Ambassador is wonderful, Love What You Do is a perfect melodic moment, Note To Self is as angry as I've heard Mr Hannon get thus far, and Dumb It Down is wonderfully lush.

Most of my all-time fave albums haven't hit me straight away. Here's just a few albums that I wasn't overly excited by on first listen - REM's Automatic For The People; Eels' Electro Shock Blues; The Pogues' Rum, Sodomy And The Lash. Now all the above are firmly in amongst my favourites of all time.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Mr Hannon's latest joins them. It's getting there!

I liked the fact that on this they seemed to have cut down on trying too hard to be smugly witty - and then I missed it. Great album though.
