Boombastic - Shaggy
by Chloboshoka
Boombastic is the third album by the reggae artist, Orville Richard Burrell. He is best known by his stage name Shaggy. Once did military service with the United States Marine Corps and eventually got the inspiration for some of his music. So far in Shaggy's music career, there have been two commercial highlights, the first is the title ... track of this album, Boombastic and the other is his later hit in 2000 called It Wasn't Me. This was one of his first highlights and I think it's helped Shaggy build a foundation for constant success.
I think the album is really good and I would consider it to be a classic. I mainly listen to the album for the title track, but I do think the album is good on shuffle. I like reggae music like this because it's so fun to listen to and it's catchy which makes it very strong. The album wreaks of good party beats and even though it's very upbeat it is very smooth that make sit sound very laid back and relaxing. The overall production of the album I think it's very slick and has Shaggy's distinctive style in all of the tracks. They particularly stand out when he raps. I found that everything was really well written.
One flaw about the album for me is that I will only ever remember one song. Boombastic, the track is a classic. I've listened to it hundreds of times during my lifetime and I will never get tired of it. It has that old school sound to it and that great sensational grove that the other tracks sadly lack. Even though I liked all of the tracks and I don't really have anything bad to say about them, I don't think I will remember them so it makes the whole album sound lackluster compared to the leading single. So what I am trying to say is that this is a great album, but they don't all give the same effect as Boombastic.
One song I can really relate to from this album is Why You Treat Me So Bad? The lyrics tell a story about a lover feeling ignored and I've kinda been feeling like that in my relationship. But it's also a very catchy and has a nice bassline. I can't help but feel they had a sample of some of the super Mario sound effects that's meant to sound like a vinyl scratch. Again it has a very awesome vintage reggae style.
Gal Yu A Pepper is so random. I'm trying to understand the song but the pace is too face and the beat is really bizarre. Forgive Them Father sounds quite angry and it sounds like accordions in the background. However these and the rest of the album show wonderful cultural influences which gives it a true Jamaican feeling to the music.
Overall, I think that the title track, Boombastic will last through the ages, but I think the album will be overshadowed by the actual song. But I would say it's worth giving a spin as you can get it pretty cheaply at the moment. I enjoyed the album and it makes me want to listen to more of his albums. Read the complete review |

Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites - Skrillex
by atanalltimelow
When I first discovered people talking about "Dubstep" I was very quick to judge and decided it was probably another one of these experimental Music Genre's that would disappear as soon as it first arrived on the scene, but as the weeks went on I discovered that this was very much not the case and that it was actually getting ... more and more popular as time progressed, so after much convincing I finally decided to check and was delighted to discover that the biggest Dubstep artist Skrillex happened to be Sonny Moore the previous frontman for the band From First To Last of which I'm very fond of.
The Album starts off with the track "Rock N Roll [Will Take You To The Mountain]" my personal favourite on this record, this track gives you the perfect introduction to Skrillex especially if you've never heard what Dubstep sounds like before, although using a lot of repeated words and phrases the exciting backbeat makes up for it with it's ever changing drops and basslines.
The next track is the Album's Title Track - "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" this track focuses more on the Music than the words, providing a very nice Melody and Rhythm, with a slightly calmer tempo than the previous track this is probably the most impressive song on the Album and will put you in a good mood straight away!
The final track I would like to talk about is the 3rd song on this Album "Kill EVERYBODY" although sounding very rage-filled and angry providing the lyrics "I want to kill everybody in the world" this track is actually very fun and relaxed, providing instruments that share the melody and lots of fun samples.
Overall I would say this album has made me fall in love with Dubstep, the drops, the samples, the synths all make for amazing music, go and check out Skrillex! You won't regret it. Read the complete review |

Sublime - Sublime
by OJEtchells10
sublime are my favourite band, this my favourite album of theirs. They are one of the first bands to mix a bit of ska and a bit of punk rock America that we all know and love. For anyone who doesnt know the story of sublime, it is a tradgety. The lead singer, Bradley Nowell along with eric and bud grew up togther in Long Beach, ... California in the 80's and their band was on the verge of mainstream success by around 1995. after recording what was to be their last album they went on tour where in 1996 and after Brad had fought a heroin addiction he relapsed and took an overdose. He died on tour and the band immedietly split up. This is the album that was released after his death.
and if you also dont know about ska it is a mix of reggae and punk often with a steady beat using a drumkit and guitar.
the first time i heard sublime i thought Brad was a black man because he sings with so much soul and unlike all these pop bands today, they were writing songs for the sake of music. They connected with their fans which is something that a lot of bands cannot do. When they were on tour they would play in a town then keeping up with their party hard attitude would be invited back to a fans house and stay there.
i could go on all day about the story of sublime but ill move onto the album. the songs are a mix of their classic ska, punk rock and a bit of mixing. Every song on the album is special in its own right and every song has a meaning. Weather its about the 1992 riots or about Brads upbringing in Long Beach. the main thing that makes this music so special compared to other ska bands arounf the time is that Brad was singing from his heart. He simply sang about his experiences and people were interested to hear it.
no doubt Brads story is tragic but for the short time he was with us he continued to create great music for any type of mood. In my opinion all of sublimes songs are a direct reflection of Brads story and his life up untill then and it works to make a genius album. Read the complete review |
