... their previous work sounds unfocused and underproduced, The Relationship of Command sounds like a million dollars - Opener 'Arc Arsenal' exploding through the speakers with pouding drums and distorted jazzy guitar licks. 'Pattern Against User' displays the unlikely melodic side of the band with the chorus, and illustrates their excellent use of dynamics as it switches gears mid track. Lead off single 'One Armed Scissor' is probably the most direct song here, but by no means ultra accessible, Cedric Bixlers shouted vo...more

Crowned Review Relationship Of Command - At The Drive-In: Send Transmission To The One Armed Scissor (874 words)

There are very few bands that have such an impact on me that I head straight out after hearing a song for the first time to hunt down their album. That is however the effect that At The Drive In had on me. I was off work ill and came across "One Armed Scissor" on an NME compilation disk and within 20 minutes I was on the way to Bracknell to get the album. Normally I'd have at least of waited and listened to it a few times before considering buying it next time I was out. No instead I went straight to MVC and picked up a copy of Relationship Of Command some 4 or 5 years ago and have never looked back. To date this is still the only At The Drive In ...  Read the complete review

At the drive-in are one of the most exciting bands out there at the minute. Widely tipped to be huge, if you have had the pleasure of seeing them live, you will know the type of passion and energy they put into their music. They are a refreshing change in an industry that seems to be losing a lot of its personality and drive. Relationship of Command is At the drive-in’s third album, and boy is it good! It has drawn comparisons with Nirvana, and that would be true to a certain extent. It is mostly guitar based, loud and angry, but the style isn’t all that close to Nirvana. The lyrics are more political than personal. The best way to describe it would ...  Read the complete review

This has to be one of the best if not the best album of 2000. Even though the music is mainly guitar based and the vocals are often shouted rather than sung, it isn't anything like what you would expect from the year that bought us albums from such 'alternative bands' like Limp Bizkit, Deftones and Papa Roach. Here the songs actually have unique meanings instead of just the usual, 'everyone hates me and i want to die' lyrics which have been very prevelant recently with the influx of 'skate rock' or whatever its called. Emotion and power are the two key elements of this album, the emotion comes from the often deeply heartfelt ...  Read the complete review

In the year 2001, the world is sadly lacking any guitar bands who are inspirational or even creating music worth listening to, and visionary hip-hop and r'n'b producers are making the future of music every day. On one hand you have your Coldplays and Travis type bands, which are pleasant enough, but my God are they dull and on the other hand there are the Offsprings, Blink 182s and Limp Bizkits, who are frankly so bad that they are not even worth commenting on let alone listening to. It is a sad fact, but At the Drive In, may be no more. Exhausted from touring they are said to be on an indefinite haitus (the term Pavement used when they split up), which ...  Read the complete review

People at my college in London are going on about all these different bands making strong headway in this, the UK's "Year of Rock" (according to the music press). Bands such as Papa Roach, Linkin Park and (shudder) the abysmal Limp Bizkit, have seen an immense increase in popularity and recognition among alternative and mainstream groups. But no one seems to mention At the drive-in, who in my opinion, with Relationship of Command, have created one of the most viscerally powerful and exciting rock albums in the last 10 years. I'm not joking about when I say this is exciting music. The first time I heard "sleepwalk capsules", a song that ...  Read the complete review
