Advantages: Contains some of the most memorable songs.
Disadvantages: Not everything will be to everyones tastes.
The film when released in 1992 caused controversy with its extreme violence and in some cases, copycat killings. The soundtrack on the other hand doesn't seem to reflect any of that. The cover does have a bunch of cool looking men with blood splashed in the background, yet the CD consists mainly of uplifting 70's songs. Some of them now famous and well known because of the success of the film. The soundtrack is presented as a radio station playing K-BILLY's Super Sounds Of The Seventies (something the characters in the film refer to) hence the 70's tracks. The unusually monotone DJ giving off the dialogue excerpts between each of the tracks gives this odd feeling that you're listening to some kind of abandoned radio station. I have listed each of the tracks and my opinion on them. 1. "and now little green bag" - A dialogue excerpt. 2. "The George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag" - The now famous song which will always be associated with Reservoir Dogs. Begins with a guitar and the shaking of a tambourine in the back, and then just starts as soon as you hear that whisper of "yeah"! A brilliant song and one that'll probably force you to walk around in slow motion in your living room with a black suit, tie and sunglasses! A real standout track and one of my favourites. 3. "rock flock of five" - A dialogue excerpt. 4. "Blue Swede - Hooked On A Feeling" - The kind of song the guys can expect to play to their loved ones! If they're not doing that then they're singing along shouting "Ooka chakka ooka, ooka, Ooka chakka ooka, ooka." Very unusual to find on this soundtrack but nonetheless a good song! The song is also associated with the dancing baby from Ally McBeal! 5. "bohemiath" - A dialogue excerpt. 6. "Joe Tex - I Gotcha" - Builds up with just the vocals making any ef
fect on the listener and then progresses into a just above average jazz effort. The singer is definitely enjoying himself (probably a little too much) as he joyously fights about having "Gotcha". Good and funny lyrics, but slightly over the top for me. 7. "Bedlam - Magic Carpet Ride" - Another of my favourites giving of this weird, dreamy fairy tale feel, borrowing heavy inspiration from Aladdin. Its a while till this song really explodes (it isn't till a minute and a half that any lyrics are spoken) and until then it's the mellow sounds of a guitar. 8. "madonna speech" - A very funny dialogue excerpt from the film with Quentin Tarantino explaining what Madonna's Like A Virgin song is all about! Not the kind of thing you should play in front of your well-respected elders, but do it anyway! 9. "Sandy Rogers - Fool For Love" - One of the tracks I usually skip. A country song which is telling an okay-ish story but to me it's just quite out of place. Not the kind of thing I listen to. 10. "super sounds" - A dialogue excerpt. 11. Stealers Wheel - Stuck In The Middle With You" - As with Little Green Bag this song has become well known because of the movie but also because the song accompanies a rather violent scene in the movie! A really good feel good song that's usually bound to get your head moving along with the beat! 12. "Bedlam - Harvest Moon" - A fairly average slow moving song with pretty mediocre lyrics also. This meaning that this is one of the songs I usually skip. 13. "lets get a taco" - A dialogue excerpt between Tim Roth's character Mr Orange and Harvey Keitel's Mr White explaining what one should do if a customer, employee or manager doesn't give you the diamonds during the robbery that they're about to attempt. Keital talking as if a complete expert on the subject (and maybe he is)!
14. "keep on truckin'" - A dialogue excerpt. 15. "Harry Nilsson - Coconut" - I'd usually switch the TV/VCR off as the end credits of a film roll up, but this song started playing and it was so absurd and crazy that I just had to listen to the rest of it! It starts of plain, slow and simple and slowly goes mental towards the end. The words "put the lime in the coconut" will probably be locked in your memory after hearing this! 16. "home of rock" - A dialogue excerpt. If you look around hard enough you might find this selling for about £6 - 8 now and at that price it's definitely worth buying! Not only are some of the tracks great songs; the film has made them a part of cinema history.
