Advantages: Loud, Heavy and in your face..

Disadvantages: few mediocre songs, but overall the albums awesome...

Released in the summer of 2006, came the 3rd album from Alaskan growlers 36 Crazyfists. It's one of my favourite albums of theirs and am quite surprised there hasn't been a review on it already. I've seen them twice live now, and both times they've been amazing. Such a close knit band, who have been together now for nearly 15 years now, and it shows as each album gets better and better.

- The Album -

It didn't do too well in the US charts, but did make it to #71 over here, unfortunately for the band the album was leaked a couple of months before its actual release.

Band members ;

Brock Lindow - Vocals/Growls
Mick Whitney - Bass
Thomas Noonan - Drums
Steve Holt - Guitar, Backing vocals

Tracklisting ;

1. "I'll Go Until My Heart Stops" - An absolute belter of a song, which is great for the first song of the album. It throws you right in the deep end, and lets you feel the full force of what 36 Crazyfists have to offer : Angry lyrics, and loud sounds. This song was the first from the album released as a single.

2. "Felt Through a Phone Line" - A soft guitar rift at the start, but Brock soon kicks in with his raw Alaskan voice. The song progresses well into an angry chorus filled with heart felt screams and growls.

3. "On Any Given Night" - Interesting start to the song with a bit of a weird guitar rift, but it goes so well, bit of a softer song this one....well for a while anyway. Brocks "softer than usual" vocals are on show through most of the song till the angry finish.

4. "Elysium" - Features some guest vocals from Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage on this one. An angry start, nice and loud just how I like it. The pace picks up after the first verse and progresses well. Howards vocals in the song fit in so well.

5. "The Great Descent" - Starts off a bit slow with a nice riff, and some proper emotional soft vocals. But as expected it doesn't stay soft for long. Not one of the best songs on the album, but it's not bad for a middle of the album song like.

6. "Midnight Swim" - One of my favourites on the album, bit of a catchy one in my opinion. Fast paced and raw.

7. "Aurora" - Bit of an emotional one this one, and it shows through the lyrics, but that doesn't mean that the song is going to be soppy in anyway, it's still as heavy as the others.

8. "Will Pull This in By Hand" - Bit of an average song this one, which is a little dissapointing, but it's not one that you'd skip when it comes on, it's an 'easy listen'.

9. "We Cannot Deny (feat. Jonah Jenkins)" - Absolutely love this song, packed full of emotion, I find myself getting a little lost in myself when I listen to this song, I love it.

10. "Between the Anchor and the Air" - Coming to the end of the album now, and this song blasts away like gunfire at your ears, and it sounds amazing.

11. "The City Ignites" - A great finish to the album, not their best song, but it rounds off the album nicely.

There was a bonus track called Mother Mary which unfortunately only featured on the Japanese release of the album.

- Overall -

I'd recommend the album to anyone who's a fan of their heavier metal, and likes their music loud with lots of rawness and growls. This is one of 36 Crazyfists best albums, ok so there's a couple of mediocre songs, but the songs that are good are bloody amazing.

Thanks for reading!
