Advantages: Easily enjoyed brutal death metal (if you find that sort of thing easy to enjoy).
Disadvantages: Doesn't stand out from the crowd.
'Resurgence of Oblivion' is second, shorter release from brutal death metal band Beheaded, featuring five tracks of unadulterated, vile death metal performed with extreme dedication. The sound is much the same as all other brutal death bands, with Lawrence Joyce's guttural burps over a putrid stream of fast and crunchy guitar riffs from Omar Grech and David Bugeja, all hammered into place by the relentless, often painful pounding of Chris Brincat, whose impressive performance never lets up across the twenty minutes.
Unlike other brutal death bands, Beheaded makes no claims to being a "technical" band, a term frequently appropriated by any guitarists who prefer to take their riffs all over the place in the pursuit of being considered more extreme, and this means that the songs are easy to follow and enjoy, presuming you can overcome the quite hefty obstacles that will deter most sane people from ever treading this far down the dark path. The songs are all relatively varied, with slow verse sections intersecting the frenzied instrumental movements in-between, and although Joyce's burps may take some getting used to for the uninitiated, he manages to form them into entertaining sing-song melodies in songs like 'Extortion of Benevolence.'
Grech and Bugeja's guitars are the real highlight, apart from the impressive endurance of the drums of course, and let rip with numerous intelligent riffs and even a great, Egyptian style guitar solo for no real reason in the title song. 'Paramnesic Dream' is comparatively less intense, which allows everyone to take their time a little more and explore other avenues before falling back on the usual style once again by the conclusion, and the finale 'Suffer Some More' burns itself out relatively quickly, leaving silence at the end for the listener to regain their composure and wait for the room to cease spinning. There are more satisfying, creative and humorous brutal death metal albums out there, but this is an interesting offering that casts a new light on Malta.
1. Transmutation of Veracity
2. Extortion of Benevolence
3. Resurgence of Oblivion
4. Paramnesic Dream
5. Suffer Some More
Summary: Beheaded's first E.P. (2000).
