Advantages: a few good songs
Disadvantages: boring
well, firstly, i love the cover design of this album. The strange pencil drawings with photographic eyes, all of them looking in different directions, just george staring you right in the face, and the curious faces behind, bearded Beatles in various poses, sitting on John's ear there, Georges head, Paul coming out of Paul's Mop top! I love John Lennons' slanty eye look, supsicisouly peering across at the man on his ear, or at Paul?? or is this alluding to his future love affir with Yoke ONo, who knows?? questions questions.
I bought this album on the pretext that this was the best album ever, one thign i can tell you before you get all excited, is that as a Beatles fan i can tell you, this is no where near even the best Beatles album, let alone the best album ever. IT is good, in parts, but no way is it that good.
The songs run as follows;
Taxman, elenor rigby, im only sleeping, love you to, here, there everywhere, yellow submarine, she said she said, good day sunshine, your bird can sing, for noone, doctro robert, i want to tell you, got to get you in to my life, tommorow never knows.
I cant stand Yellow Submarine which is dumped in the middle of this album. Why did they put it there, why didnt they release a ringo starr plays nursery tunes album?? even as a 4 year old kid i hated this song, i certainly dont like it now. It is a huge inconvenicne having to skip it every time i put the album on.
This album reeks of Paul Mccartney, it sounds immature, lackign depth, lacking any real feeling. Good Day Sunshine, i dont understand this song, its feel good yes, but has it any place on a Beatles album??? Its nothign more than a merry pop song with predicatable, unorignal melody. "here there everywhere", another song which sounds NICE< just nice, no other description is needed, it isnt original, or interesting, it si just nice, happy, lalalala.
So much of this album is lalalala nice, the beatles seem stuck between thier earlier days and a new more mature sound which i loved them for. There isnt a single song on this album which i would put in a Beatles top 20. "she said, she said", a return to the early 60s, why bother with it??
All through this album, i could not help but think, how could this possibly be described as the best beatles album? It doesnt even come close to abby Road or the White album. the best songs are 'your bird can sing' and 'elenor Rigby'. I cant help but think that this albumsounds like an advertsement for orange juice, the constant up-beat, twangy sounds, get very boring. Certainly not Beatles at their best.
Summary: if you are a beatles fan then i suppose you need to have it

- 12/07/06 You have to listen to this album in the context of what preceded it. Albums were full of "I love you, you love me", suddenly here was the Beatles singing about a drug-pushing doctor, and having a good old go at the establishment "Taxman Mr Wilson, taxman Mr Heath". Many bands set out to shock these days..the Beatles opened the flood-gates 40 years ago. |

- 19/11/05 Wow...I never thought I'd read a bad review of this record.
Intere sting stuff; I'm not a huge Beatles fan myself, but it's interesting to find one who doesn't like Revolver that much. |
