Advantages: Huge array of influences, trippy psychadelica rock, great songs.
Disadvantages: Absolutely none.
Regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and by one of the greatest bands of all time, Revolver by The Beatles marked a change in sound for the group. Drugs were rife and seemed amost necessary for creative process, their popularity was widespread and they were on the verge of quitting touring. The album is a masterpiece and holds many of my favourite Beatles tracks. I will outline a few of them in this review.
Taxman
Funky bassline and guitar stabs characterise the Beatles dig on the taxman. Lines like 'be thankful I don't take it all' show the sense of humour and ease in their public persona which wasn't particuarly prominent in succesful, serious rock groups of the time. The song heralds some psychadelic qualities with the trippy guitar playing.
I'm Only Sleeping
One of my favourite Beatles tracks. It's got such a dreamy feel to it, acoustic guitar, double tracked vocals and the magnificent backwards guitar courtest or Mr Harrison which is fantastic and must have taken him literally an age to master. Great lyrics also just about being a lazy so and so.
She Said She Said
Psychadelic feel becomes increasingly evident as the album goes on. This song is reportedly about an acid trip that Lennon had. The guitar is dreamy, drums loose and vocals in the Lennon favoured double tracked form.
And Your Bird Can Sing
A very poppy effort by the fab four, the guitar riff is great. The lyrics are cheesy and the melody brilliant. Its like early Beatles with distorted riffing guitar leading the way.
For No One
Odd, slightly creepy narrative from Paul telling us of a girl who runs away. The guitar sounds like a harpsichord! Shows real diversity from The Beatles, a step away from The Beatles of old.
Revolver is a terrific album and I haven't covered half of it. Theres real diversity and massive influences that simply weren't evident in their earlier work, this was the group's step away from pop to a more trippy, experimental rock form. It was Tommorow Never Knows that tipped Britain toward psychadelica in th first place. This is one of my favourite Beatles album and takes pride of place in my collection.
Summary: A brilliant album, one of the greatest albums of all time no doubt.
