Advantages: Not full of mushy love songs
Disadvantages: Was Kylie's last pop album for ages
This album was by far the best ever work Kylie created with PWL and under the production of Stock Aitken and Waterman, it was around this time that Kylie needed to explore. The news was that Kylie had found sex, drugs and rock and roll, all this was down to one man and that was the late Michael H from INXS, if this is true then thank you Michael you brought us all a Kylie never seen before and the public adored her even more. Although this her best work to date it was by no means Kylie's most successful era, but a damn fine album it is. First up we have 'Better The Devil You Know', now this is not to be mixed up with Sonia's Eurovision attempt by the same name, or even Step's cover of this. This is Kylie's anthem it was the classic that filled every dance floor all over the world, with it's high energy beat and Kylie sounding stronger than ever before this fast became a disco classic and a gay anthem through and through. Then we are treated to the funky 70's disco get up with 'Step Back In Time', I used always put a show on with this one feather boa and massive pink sunglasses you know just like the ones in the video, yeah that’s the ones, they were awful!! Video shot and song recorded in L.A. it had the very 70's underground disco feeling with punchy beat and lyrics to go with it one of the finer songs from a delightful album. Back to the dance floor but this is more up to date with the electric synths and classic video for 'What Do I Have To Do' that had Kylie looking super sexy even though she nearly froze herself to death in that swimming pool, Dannii made an appearance in this video and even sang on the backing tracks and not many people know that, well now you do! This again became a massive disco and gay anthem and always goes down a treat at weddings and birthdays. Still on the roller coaster of rhythm and love we are treated to 'Secrets' a
cheery love ballad even though it is about someone she thought she was long rid off. Could you see Kylie being the hurting kind not at all, well seems like she did, she felt sorry for him and fell back in the same trap, we all do but Kylie helps us get over by saying hey who cares we all mistakes, a lovely cheery instrumental half way through a classic B side but would have been a good single, bit like 'What Kind of Fool' released in later years! 'Always Find The Time’ is another funky little number with lots of electronic drums and keyboards pure electric pop, agh it is just the way those SAW guys loved it, but this one is a bit of a non starter, although Kylie's vocals on this sound fantastic, but it is very repetitive and a bit boring hearing the same thing time after time. Now it is time for slowing it down on this album with 'The World Still Turns' and this is the first time we ever hear Kylie having a right good bash at a ballad, but then it is soon spoiled by her vocals being twisted and echoed with the electric synths would have been beautiful without the effects thanks... I am 'Shocked' this is a classic especially the album version, there is a massive build up to the song, with winds and chimes here and there it is just great... you really think you are on a journey heading somewhere then all of a sudden is asking the questions, a pure pop song if ever we needed one this is it, I put it on at every party and every one is up, it is just so sexy at the start, and the haunting vocals and the real catchy chorus, when released as a single had a fantastic rap by Jazzi P a great American female rapper, this is missing from the album but this is the best version as it is much longer than the single, the best track on this album by far. Ever thought of Kylie as a rapper well this is her being a 'One Boy Girl' and she is enjoying herself so much, her vocals are strong and oozing with
girl power and attitude, she works great with the female backing singers on this and when she starts her rap she has a full conversation during it with another unknown female rapper but it is great, Kylie just sounds so cute and this would have been a great single. Keeping up the pace that we are currently set at Kylie decides that 'Things Can Only Get Better', no not D:Ream better but Kylie better, just the same name, this is another pure pop funk tune and has a bass beat to die for. Kylie's vocals are strong but they are distorted a lot on this one but this time it works well, it is a little like 'Shocked' but has a character all by itself, Kylie is teaching us all something here stand up for yourself no matter what other people think! Don't Give Up basically is the message she is sending! How many times has Kylie has to slog it out to get where she is?? Too many she is a star let's give her respect... ‘Count The Days' is an indication that we are getting to the end of the album as things are slowing right back down again here, good thing about this album is it does lack the slow ballads, this is a nice little number and sees Kylie crooning about her lover, wishing they were back together, although it does have a rather funky beat it is a beautiful love song, a bit like early days Kylie. Then the tile track 'Rhythm Of Love' this is a sweet upbeat melody type love song again, but this time it is a bit of R&B sound even though it was not really the vibe of the time, but Kylie carries this of well and shows that she has very strong vocals, one of the few songs on the album where Kylie's voice is left untouched a nice happy one to end with, makes me want to hit repeat for the whole ensemble again. This was the last album that we saw from Kylie before she went into her serious mode but now it is good to see Ms Minogue back to her usual self in the year 2000 with the classic all time K
ylie album 'Light Years' see my award winning review of another fantastic album.
