... into a visualisation of the exodus. Great opener. 8/10. 2. Ride On The title song. Gorgeous guitar work with a real Latin feel for the introduction. It is a folk tale of admiration and perhaps jealousy. The story of a peasant looking on to a woman of riches riding on, who he may or may not have had a dalliance with. To me it is very folky and not that strong, but pleasant enough. 6/10. 3. Vive la Quinte Brigada This song is fantastic. Many people may not know that a bunch of Irish Socialists went of to fight in ...more

Crowned Review Ride On - Christy Moore: The greatest musician alive? (1300 words)

Christy Moore - Ride On. 1984. I have long been a fan of Irish music, and a fan of protest songs, from John Lennon to The Clash, so it is fair to say that I have a fair collection of Irish protest music, some of which has a distinctly anti-British feel. Before anyone slates me for writing a review of well known IRA sympathisers' songs, many of which are very supportive of the IRA cause, let me say this. Like it or not, there has been a conflict between the British and Irish for hundreds of years, and the troubles of the 70's and 80's were not new. It was inevitable that songs would be written, and inevitable that whoever wrote them would ...  Read the complete review

As I sit here at the computer while I listen to Christy Moore singing on CD I was inspired to write. I am listening to ride on, it's making me feel wistful a little sad but also cheerful, it is a mixture of emotions. Christy sings some beautiful songs Love songs, love for his woman, love of his country, about war and strife. Some bring a tear to the eye another a smile to the lips. Here I am sat here singing along Ooh listoonvarna, listdoonvarna everyone needs a break climb a mountain swim in the lake Sean Doherty goes down for the rose of Tralee But I like my music in the open air (so do I Christy) I saw heard Christy at ...  Read the complete review

Ride On - Christy Moore: Claw My Gut (1288 words)

Ride On has long been my favourite Christy Moore Album. Since he has released over twenty albums in the last thirty years or so, that's quite an accomplishment. This, his tenth album, was released in 1984, and contains a selection of what has become a pretty standard Christy album combination. The majority of the tracks are traditional Irish folk songs. Throw in a couple more modern Celtic tracks, a folk song or two from another country and a couple of tracks written by Christy himself, and you have the recipe for the usual stunning example of Christy's Celtic offerings. The album is simple in its musical accompaniments, with the standard bodhran ...  Read the complete review
