Christy Moore - Ride On. 1984. I have long been a fan of Irish music, and a fan of protest songs, from John Lennon to The Clash, so it is fair to say that I have a fair collection of Irish protest music, some of which has a distinctly anti-British feel. Before anyone slates me for writing a review of well known IRA sympathisers' songs, many of which are very supportive of the IRA cause, let me say this. Like it or not, there has been a conflict between the British and Irish for hundreds of years, and the troubles of the 70's and 80's were not new. As I sit here at the computer while I listen to Christy Moore singing on CD I was inspired to write. I am listening to ride on, it's making me feel wistful a little sad but also cheerful, it is a mixture of emotions. Christy sings some beautiful songs Love songs, love for his woman, love of his country, about war and strife. Some bring a tear to the eye another a smile to the lips. Ride On has long been my favourite Christy Moore Album. Since he has released over twenty albums in the last thirty years or so, that's quite an accomplishment. This, his tenth album, was released in 1984, and contains a selection of what has become a pretty standard Christy album combination. The majority of the tracks are traditional Irish folk songs. Throw in a couple more modern Celtic tracks, a folk song or two from another country and a couple of tracks written by Christy himself, and you have the recipe for the usual stunning example of Christy's Celtic offerings.
