I can't say enough good things about this cd. The fact that Metallica was able to even write songs considering their relative infrequency to being sober is an amazing accomplishment in itself. The opening track starts innocent enough. "Fight Fire with Fire" begins as an acoustic melody, then all of a sudden you are slammed with some DAMN fast heavy shredding followed by pounding drums. Only then can you see the fury of Metallica. "For whom the Bell Tolls" tells the epic of a soldier fighting in a war that seems to be going nowhere, through Hetfields screaming vocals, Burtons chugging and licking bass and Hammett's wailing axework. Then all of a sudden, "Fade to Black" enters. This deceptively soft song show some of the finest solo work of Metallica's early career. Then comes my favorite song off this cut. "Creeping Death" is a song tailor made for an arena. Anyone who has seen 40,000 metalheads pounding their firsts to the chant of "Die! Die! Die!" knows exactly what I mean. In fact, the live show that Metallica puts on is supercharged enough as is, but if anyone has seen footage of pre-Black Album live shows will drool over the alcohol-drenched metal goodness that goes on there.I have yet to hear a more exciting rendition of the plagues of Egypt. As a finale, "Call of Ktulu" wraps this cd up, playing an incredible instrumental song that seems to take you on a journey to the abyss and back. Also, this song sounds twice as heavy with an orchestra backing them (off their latest release, S&M). Summary: |
