Florida’s The Absence are one of the more interesting modern bands playing melodic death metal, in that their material doesn’t just sound like a cheap imitation of In Flames during their less creative eras, and manages to exude aggression without descending into Soilwork-style metalcore. The sound is still rooted firmly in the oversaturated Gothenburg style, which keeps the band from producing anything truly original or inspired, and much of their latest album ‘Riders of the Plague’ reminds distinctly of At the Gates, one of the other Gothenburg originators, and the various projects its members have been involved with in more recent years such as The ...
