First up, let's get one thing clear: an average Pearl Jam album tends to still far exceed the quality of 'best' albums from most other bands in the world, and if such a thing exists, 'Riot Act' is probably Pearl Jam's most average album to date. After a 3 year hiatus following Binaural, Riot Act sits uncomfortably during the period of the first George W Bush administration, and on 'Bu$shleaguer' and 'Green Disease', you can certainly tell, as the band rail against the neo conservative regime. There are true gems to be heard though - 'Thumbing My Way', 'Love Boat Captain' and 'You Are' would fit well on some of the band's more commercially friendly earlier albums, but ... Is it the end of the long road for Pearl Jam ? A band that has said all it has to say is deemed to end. However, if the first impression you get by listening to Riot Act could be so, I doubt really much that the band is over. Pearl Jam reluctantly coped with the pleasure of success ten years ago or so, with the release of their Ten masterpiece, and decided to play down their part in the grunge bandwagon, slowly deflecting to a more mature mainstream rock approach. However the quality of their songwriting is always very high. Take this record for instance. It could have songs that will make you feel like "What's this pile of rubbish?" ... Products similar to Riot Act - Pearl Jam
Vii - At Vance
More fast and slow power metal with an even more substantial eighties touch.
Disappointing change of direction, with less focus on neoclassical guitars.
Worlds Collide - Apocalyptica
'Last Hope' is good, thrashy, old-school Apocalyptica.
The band is all too happy to abandon its identity.
Volume 8: The Threat Is Real - Anthrax
More experimental and fun than other mid-to-late-nineties Anthrax.
Still nothing like the good ol' days.
Stomp 442 - Anthrax
Groove metal fans may enjoy it.
This is horrible.
Sound Of White Noise - Anthrax
If you're desperate for more generic early-nineties hard rock/grunge.
Doesn't sound like Anthrax, and John Bush doesn't impress.
Persistence Of Time - Anthrax
More technical, melodic, heavy, varied, epic and powerful than anything else the band would release.
A couple of songs still sound similar.
Eclipse - Amorphis
Skilfully combines the band's disparate styles under a talented new singer.
Over-reliance on slow, gothic rock pieces becomes tiresome.
Attack Of The Killer B's - Anthrax
Some good hardcore-thrash crossover stuff, and interesting new material.
Comedy songs are a bit rubbish, and some of the covers too basic.
Bring The Noise - Anthrax
Rap metal that isn't terrible, balanced out with a couple of near-classics.
May alienate metal fans, and hip hop fans may not like the later tracks.
Plays Metallica By Four Cellos - Apocalyptica
Fantastic take on some classic Metallica songs
Shame the album is only 8 songs long not 88
