Sonic Flower Groove - Primal Scream
by cswann - written on 09/09/00 (Very useful, 73 readings)
Rating:
drumming ("Imperial", "We go down slowly rising" - although the tunes are fine), which sounds like it could even be a drum machine. Beware if you like Primal Scream's later stuff - this is quite different. It's not at all like "Screamadelica", and it doesn't sound like the heavily-influenced-by-Rolling-Stones stuff either. It's more like 1980s indie pop. This album isn't as highly produced as "Screamadelica", which can mean that singer Bobby Gillespie sounds a bit on the fey side at times, (I never said out of tune!) but songs such as "Aftermath" and "Gentle Tuesday" are such good ...

Vanishing Point - Primal Scream

Rating:
'Give Out But Don't Give Up' was a damn poor follow-up to the modern classic 'Screamadelica'. Primal Scream themselves put the lack of inspiration on that album down to the copious quantities of nasty drugs they were ingesting at the time. 'Nuff said. But! 'Vanishing Point' was an assured return to form, though it hasn't had quite the reception 'Xtrmntr' has. Mani (ex-Stone Roses) found a place for himself in the band, and flexed his bass thang, to most devastating effect on the acid dub freakscape of "Kowalski". "Out Of The Void" and "Star" fill the Primals' obligatory blissed-out ...

Vanishing Point - Primal Scream

Rating:
Of the last four Primal Scream albums, this is perhaps the most diverse. On the whole a more spaced out, more electronic offering than previous outings, it makes for compelling listening. The rock influences of Give Up But Don't Give Out are here, but with added grit and intensity - take for example track 9, Motorhead, where almost every component part seems to have been routed through a distortion pedal. The electronic stylings foreshadow Exterminator, but lack the fast, infectious beats. The chilled out Star demonstrates this - design and components closer to perhaps one of the calmer Massive Attack tunes than to, say, Accelerator. And as a listening experience, ...
