Another update...have to do a proper rewrite soon! T Thelonious Monk is my favourite jazz musician and probably my favourite artist of any kind. He can be termed a genius so easily because of his entirely unique approach to music, the piano, and composition (and life, so I read). His piano really is completely charming in a very off key and wonky fashion, a unique take on the instrument and a world away from the European/Classical styled technique of other more fluent piano players. Thelonious Monk was a maverick jazz pianist that cannot really be pigeonholed into any one movement. In the “Playboy Guide to Jazz” (see review), Neil Tesser describes him as the “midwife” of bebop, in that “he was present at the birth, but the baby didn’t look much like him”. The contrasts between Monk and his contemporaries are instantly obvious – his lines are angular and jagged, while theirs are smooth and natural.
