Road to Damascus is the new album by Italian folk//roots band Municipale Balcanica. The album follows the band on an imaginary tour to Damascus and takes in numerous styles. The band made up completely of Italians and not even a gypsy in sight, play some Romani music with a kind of swing feel to it. The flute player and saxophonist are notably good throughout and the tempo of the music is wonderfully controlled. The album starts off strong with Gypsy Train, which somehow gets the rythm of a train chugging along through the countryside, speeding up and slowing down at level crossings (if trains do that?!).
