Advantages: Good variety of quality, recognisable tracks, perfect accompaniment to the film, cheap to buy
Disadvantages: None
Love stories and songs aren't usually my thing, but the I thought the film remake was excellent. It's because of this that I downloaded the soundtrack which complements the film wonderfully. The songs on their own may not have stood out to you before or necessarily be your taste, if you've seen the filmed and liked it, you may find yourself listening to the soundtrack on repeat (like me!).
Romeo & Juliet (please note this is the official music from the motion picture, so it's the popular songs rather than the actual score) was released on CD in March 1997. It's quite surprising that the music still sounds fresh and up-to-date considering that was now over 10 years ago. Doesn't time fly?!
The 1 disk CD compromises of 13 tracks:
1. #1 Crush - Garbage
2. Local God - Everclear
3. Angel - Gavin Friday
4. Pretty Piece of Flesh - One Inch Punch
5. Kissing You - Des'ree
6. Whatever (I Had a Dream) - Butthole Surfers
7. Lovefool - Cardigans
8. Young Hearts Run Free - Kym Mazelle
9. Everybody's Free (To Feel Good) - Quindon Tarver
10. To You I Bestow - Mundy
11. Talk Show Host - Radiohead
12. Little Star - Stina Nordenstam
13.You and Me Song - The Wannadies
I can associate most of the above songs to the bits they relate to in the film and I think it's that which mostly gives the strength to the soundtrack. That said, the music is still of a good variety so even if you haven't seen/didn't like the movie it's still worth listening to if you want to spice things up a bit rather than listen to an album with just one genre. There's some well-known bands, such as Garbage and Cardigans, along with lesser-known artists like Mundy. Even though it's good to hear fresh tracks, most of the songs are recognisable which I find to be a good thing.
Each song has an appeal and an emotional attachment, though there's a variation in style. For example You And Me Song is happy but slightly more mellow, Kissing You is slower and more romantic, and Pretty Piece Of Flesh is more revved up and edgy. I don't think there's any tracks that need to be glossed over, unlike with some albums where you pick out your favourites and the others get skipped because they're quite wishy-washy. Because of this, the album has sense of quality and perfected finish, leaving it with a well-wrapped feel.
Overall I would recommend this, especially as it's gone down in price due to age (or you could download). Amazon sell it for £3.98, but I've seen it in Woolworths for under £5 too. A must if you love the film and a great album to add to your collection for a bit of variety :o)
Summary: A nice little album for your collection that's good for singalongs too!
