Advantages: Wide ranging and emotive

Disadvantages: Rock tinted, which is great if you like it but if you don't....

Before I begin I should admit something. Now this is something I am deeply ashamed of and have recieved counselling for, so your support would be appreciated here...ok, here goes. The main reason I ever watched the film 'Romeo and Juliet' was to see a certain Mr. DiCaprio. I can't claim I was interested in seeing how the director managed to expertly pull off 'modernising' a tragic Shakespearean love story without losing the fundamental appeal of a classic...I wanted to see Leo's writhing half naked body.
But without this temporary lapse in taste on my part, I would possibly never have been as infatuated with such amazing movie and equally maybe never have been introduced to the remarkable talents showcased on the soundtrack, volume one.
The adaptation of 'Romeo and Juliet' surprised a lot of people in that Baz Luhrmann managed not to murder it violently, and anyone who has seen the film would agree. 'Volume One' reflects the action and pace of the movie perfectly, taking you from the heavy base rock of 'Pretty Piece of Flesh' by One Inch Punch to the glorious and emotive 'Kissing You' ballad by Des'ree and floating down to near suicidal Radiohead and Stina Nordenstam before dragging you back from the brink with an uplifting track from The Wannadies. This album is celestially arranged and though admittedly is perhaps mostly erring on the side of soft rock, I think it has a wide appeal: especially if it introduces the kind of people who dribble over Leonardo DiCaprio to music by Everclear and Butthole Surfers. And don't get me started on Volume Two.
Although people who have seen the film will undoubtedly love this album, those who haven't or who didn't particularly like it I think will also appreciate it. Look what it did for me.
