Paul McCartney - the man is a musical genius. This was evident throughout his Beatle years probably more so than since then, and that was when he was doing what he does best - good old rock 'n' roll. I wasn't around in that fanastic decade, having rather unfortunatly been born about thirty years too late, and yet the Beatles are a great passion of mine, because their talent, in my opinion, is timeless. In this his latest album, Paul makes a return to 'the good old days' in an attempt to make his records the way he used to with his fellow moptops - minimal rehearsal, just playing around, seeing what happens - and capturing the raw energy and enthusiam of this exuberant genre of music. 'Run Devil Run' has lived up to Macca's promise of a return to his youth with covers of 'some of the songs that first made me want to pick up a guitar'such as Blue Jean Bop, I Got Stung and a brilliant cover of Elvis' All Shook Up. The title track is pulsing with Paul's enthusiasm and my fave, What It Is, written about the late Linda McC is an absolute cracker. I wasn't sure to what extent Paul would manage to 'Get Back' to the sound that once turned him (and so many millions of others) on but (why on earth did I doubt him?) he has certainly managed it. As always, the man has given us 100% of himself - his talent, creativity and enthusiasm, and this is captured magnificently on this '60s evocative album. Again, again! (We want more!). Paul McCartney, it's official: YOU ROCK. Summary: |
