Advantages: Good songs, in general very listenable.
Disadvantages: isnt strung together that tightly
For me, Sam's Town is probably the best Killer's album. I know A LOT of people will disagree with me. Just flicking through the reviews here, there seem to be alot of disappointment and comparison to their previous Hot Fuss. But, really, I love this one the best.
Dont get me wrong, Hot Fuss was good. Really Good. But after Indie Rock and Roll, I just stopped listening. I think that the Killers have put all their good songs at the start of that album.
But this one is different. Sure, there are flaws. It doesnt string together as nicely as Hot Fuss, the songs seem less connected. And it has more than it's fair share of filler tracks. But overall, I think this is a good album.
Of course, I could just be saying that because it contains one of my favourite songs of all time, When You Were Young. but there are other things. The songs are spread out a bit more evenly, and the general feel of it is just more ... well, American, I think.
I've read (and heard) alot of things about this album, about how the Killers were trying to get into the "Great American Songbooks" with this album and the songs in it, and I think they fell short a little. Their original band just wasn't all that American, to be honest.
But what we're left with is a strange mix. A mix of their elctrical synths with Springsteenian guitar riffs, and I like it. Definately worth checking out.
Summary: Interesting, worth a listen.
