I, as I'm sure many others did, bought this album on the strength of the fabulous Black and Gold, thinking Sam Sparro was going to be the next big singer songwriter. Part of me is still hoping he'll come up with something as good as Black and Gold, but after a few listens of the rest of the offers on this 13 track album I'm not particularly optimistic and I think it's more likely Sam Sparro is going to be another one hit wonder. Black and gold the obvious highlight, and I'm still glad I own it, the other songs take nothing away form it being brilliant, but none come close to living up to it. Sam Sparro burst onto the music scene earlier this year with his smash hit "Black and Gold", a song about God which was headed for the number one spot for many weeks. Unfortunately it never made it there. This self titled album is his debut. Very occasionally a pop act comes along who hasn't been mentored on a talent tv show, or who isn't related to somebody famous. Sam Sparro is one of those rare finds who has rose up the charts at a blistering rate due to a superbly infectious debut single that has captured the public imagination. Leaving theatrical gimicks to that other recent male discovery Mika, Sam relies on electro vibes that play backdrop to his somewhat soulful voice. The perfect opening to the album comes in the form of Too Many Question, a mid-tempo funk track that calls to mind early 90's George Michael.
