Young Americans - David Bowie

Crowned Review Do I want a Young American? Well, I wouldn't mind one... (909 words)
by DanielKemp - written on 27/05/09 (Very useful, 73 readings)
Rating:

Somebody up There Likes Me Across the Universe Can You Hear me Call? Fame The story usually goes that in a galaxy far, far away, everybody was surprised when David Bowie changed from glam-rock icon into a star studded Philadelphia crooner, often marking this as one of the more important metamorphoses in his career. The truth is that you d have to have been an idiot not to have seen it coming. If we rewind to his previous studio album, Diamond Dogs, David was already basking in a number of influences, primarily those of soul and R n B. Rock n Roll with Me was probably the greatest indicator on Diamond Dogs as to what was to be expected. If more proof was needed, ...

Young Americans - David Bowie

Premium Review What you need you have to borrow (269 words)
by 1980floorshow - written on 05/11/00 (Very useful, 103 readings)
Rating:

Young Americans is a departure from what Bowie fans came to expect from his previous albums. Changing from the classic rock style of his previous albums, Bowie begins to delve into the style of rythm + blues. This album marks the death of such personnae as Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Sane and Halloween Jack (Diamond Dogs). The title track is a classic example of commercialism, clearly appealing to the radio audiences of the mid-seventies who were leaning more towards disco. Changing directions from his previous style of music, one would feel a bit confused as to if this was Bowie at all. (Again, based on his previous works) Bowie teams up with John Lennon on a few ...

Dance, you'd think David Bowie would have capitalized on his recent return to chart favour with a corker of an album (something that wouldn't actually happen until 1993). Fans and critic now agree that the follow up disc, Tonight, was an absolute failure. The two singles - Loving The Alien and Blue Jean - being the ...

Products similar to Santa Monica '72 - David Bowie

'The Adventure' is a pretty decent track. The rest of the album is incredibly dull.

Improved production and skill. Still endlessly repetitive.

Intense. Lacks variety.

Fast, I guess? One of the worst production jobs in history.

Quality musicians, some great compositions None

A hard garage-rock leaning, fast and furious pace A couple of tracks don't reach fruition

More products in Music Album

Thrash Metal - Blood Tsunami
Straightforward and accessible with enjoyable riffs and solos Somewhat generic

Ten - Blitzkrieg
The band comfortably integrates into the nineties. Later songs sound similar.

Seventeen Seconds - The Cure
A couple of the songs don't stink... um... Robert Smith was trying to be clever in his sparse instrumental arrangements and it back-fired!

Sex Reflex - Bile
May have made Krztoff some more money. Alienates more serious fans.

Resurrection Through Carnage - Bloodbath
Should please fans of the early Swedish death bands. At times, sounds like a cheap imitation.

Insect Song - Beyond The Embrace
Improved vocal style, and less exclusively derivative of melodeath bands. Songs lack the variety and energy of the previous album.

Faith - The Cure
The Cure's strongest set of songs when released, great arrangements for the most part Primary and Doubt, while not bad songs, stick out artistically

Demonic Electronic - Bile
The return of the darkness and evil. Not as varied as previous works.

Copy Machine - Bile
You may know the original songs... ...but these covers are nothing special.

Breeding Death - Bloodbath
Crunchy, unpretentious old school death metal with great riffs and vocals Short, even for an EP
