Advantages: a few ok songs

Disadvantages: dodgy songs

The joys of the Scatman! Scatman John was at the height of his fame in the mid nineties, before an untimely death robbed the music world of what could have been a superstar in the making.

His debut album has a few delights on it and some lesser treats. There is an overblown intro. Someone like Scatman John really does not need an intro. He was not a megastar who needed to hype his arrival, but here is a pointless talky ambient intro to launch this album.

We then head off into the chirpy 'Scatman's World' with plenty of his trademark ski bee dee wopping over a eurobeat. It is insanely catchy and you will find yourself singing along. As a pop song it holds its own and is one of the stronger songs.

Scatman tries to sing on 'Only You.' It is a painful experience as he lunges for the high notes and sounds like he is having a hernia. Someone restrain the man! 'Quiet Desperation' is just annoying, as he goes all serious and starts rapping about life living on the street and homelessness. It is overly preachy and sits badly on the album.

His biggest hit was 'Scatman.' A belter of a euro hit, with a dancey beat and some of the catchiest scatting you will ever hear. 'Sing Now' is a success, with a similar tune and plenty of hook laden charm.

'Mambo Jambo' is prety tedious as he jumps on the mambo bandwagon, so it is a relief when 'Song Of Scatland' returns him to his roots. The album is not world class, nor will it change the world of music. It suffices more for novelty factor. If you like eurodance like Clock and Cappella it might appeal though and twelve songs gives a rounded enough album.

Summary: so so

"I'm a scatman..." Blimey, it's been a long time since I've been reminded of that song! I didn't know he'd died.
