... drums and guitars with no real melody – this is the only weak track on the album. ‘Spacetravel’ features Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), Gavin’s wife-to-be singing on the chorus and is a slightly quieter affair. ‘40 Miles From the Sun’ begins with deep haunting guitars and Gavin’s chilling vocals are most prominent throughout the song. The seventh track ‘Prizefighter’ takes the listener back to the well-known upbeat rocking singalong Bush song. ‘The Disease of ...more

Premium Review The Science Of Things - Bush: English Fire or just a flicker? (944 words)

I have a lot to say on this particular album. Having always had somewhat of a soft spot for Bush and their Nirvana-esque sound, it was with no great surprise that I found myself loving their latest effort with vigour. Their sound is somewhat consistent, through "Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase", there is no mistaking their sound for even an instant. Perhaps lacking in diversity, then, but more than made up for by their consistency, their lead singer, Gavin Rossdale, ensures that their lyrical content is always powerful and biting. Bush have always had a very strong sound, sort of a british post-nirvana feel, and their stand out tracks are always ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Bush who? (891 words)

This is the third studio album from one of the UK?s biggest rock groups, probably bigger in America than here in the UK but this album proves how good Bush are. "The Science of Things" is significantly different to Bush's previous albums "Sixteen Stone" and "Razorblade Suitcase", but this doesn't make it any worse, it's just different and the album deserves more credit than it received. To find out more information about Bush visit their website, www.bushnet.com. The album inlay is very strange; it has the lyrics to all of the songs. For each song there is two pages and there is some very strange art work, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Science Of Things - Bush: Bush's Latest Concoction (264 words)
by - written on 03/05/01 (Very useful, 11 readings)

‘The Science of Things’ is Bush’s third album offering from 1999. It opens with ‘Warm Machine’ which is classic Bush sound – rocking guitars and Gavin’s guttural vocals. ‘The Chemicals Between Us’ was the first single taken from the album and is the first indication that Bush have progressed as a band. The sound although still Bush guitars, changes with drumbeats sounding more electronic. ‘English Fire’ the fourth track seems to be quite repetitive pounding drums and guitars with no real melody – this is the only weak track on the album. ‘Spacetravel’ features Gwen Stefani (No ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A giant leap forward (196 words)
by - written on 10/12/00 (Useful, 16 readings)

After the more straight forward rock of the last two album ( Deconstructed doesn't count ). Bush released what is probably their most varied album yet. I think it definitely shows a big progression in the sound. On this album Rossdale's lyrics actually make a bit more sense and actually give the songs more meaning as a result. The band have also expereimented with beat samples on tracks such Altered States and it actuallt works. This is an album that grows on you with every listen. Chemicals Between Us actually got some recognition as a good tune from some of the UK press as well. There is still an element of anger in the music but then you get slow songs ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Science Of Things - Bush: The state the science of things (138 words)
by - written on 23/08/00 (Useful, 26 readings)

So to Bush's 3rd album, Deconstructed excepting. It has to be said that Bush get a raw deal in the UK. Despite major MTV exposure and multiple album sales abroad, their profile is low. This is the sort of album that makes it hard to understand why. The Science of Things is less heavy than sixteen.. and Razorblade. But it is overall a more mature, composed and dare I say, talented record. My favourites are Prizefighter and Jesus Online, but no tune is less than brilliant. Like the others, it mixes rocking tracks with some gorgeous songs, all spiked with that bit of anger the group seem to have, which gives them such an edge over the ...  Read the complete review
