‘The Science of Things’ is Bush’s third album offering from 1999. It opens with ‘Warm Machine’ which is classic Bush sound – rocking guitars and Gavin’s guttural vocals. ‘The Chemicals Between Us’ was the first single taken from the album and is the first indication that Bush have progressed as a band. The sound although still Bush guitars, changes with drumbeats sounding more electronic. ‘English Fire’ the fourth track seems to be quite repetitive pounding drums and guitars with no real melody – this is the only weak track on the album.

‘Spacetravel’ features Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), Gavin’s wife-to-be singing on the chorus and is a slightly quieter affair. ‘40 Miles From the Sun’ begins with deep haunting guitars and Gavin’s chilling vocals are most prominent throughout the song.

The seventh track ‘Prizefighter’ takes the listener back to the well-known upbeat rocking singalong Bush song. ‘The Disease of the Dancing Cats’ is political and environmental as it concerns dangerous chemicals being dumped and the effect it has on the people and animals nearby – it’s sort of written from Gavin’s angry point of view so therefore it’s a heavy shouter of a song. ‘Letting the Cables Sleep’ was the most unusual single released with its tender and distant vocals with accompanying strings, piano and echoing guitars and subtle electronic beats – one of the highlights on the album.

‘The Science of Things’ ends with the typical rocker (‘Mindchanger’) expected of Bush and sums up the album with its experimentation and reliable well-known rock songs.
