Advantages: Slower, heavier and more melodic than prior albums

Disadvantages: Must be in the right mood, not for sissies

This is, IMO, Slayer's best album and makes my top 10 of all time best heavy metal albums. Why this one and not "Reign In Blood" or "South of Heaven"? Because this album is the perfect blend of heavy riffs, blazing solos, songwriting structure and production quality just not seen in their prior efforts. While "South Of Heaven" has many good songs and shows maturity and promise, it just doesn't measure up to "Seasons In The Abyss" in sheer depth.

Also, I understand that the "Reign In Blood" appeals to many hard core Slayer fans for its aggressive hard-core approach, but other than the title song, it just sounds like a bunch of noise to me without any clear separation, where as every song on "Seasons in the Abyss" is memorable and distinct. Other than the classic title cut my personal favorites are "Skeletons Of Society" and "Dead Skin Mask", perhaps the creepiest, most disturbing song ever written.

Summary: One of those few albums where EVERY song is a GREAT song
