‘Sell Sell Sell’ is one of David Gray’s earlier albums before his success with White ladder and Lost Songs. Published in 1996, this album is once again crammed full of good tracks.

* The Album Tracks.

# Faster, Sooner Now [2:23]

The opening track “Faster, Sooner, Now” is rather a short song consisting of about 2 and a half minutes. The intro is rather fetching as it involves a drum sequence then leading into “Hey Now” sung or shouted out by David. This is a good track and the drums and guitars play well. Gray’s voice is very rough in this track which creates textures in the song. 7.5/10

# Late Night Radio [3:53]

The second track “Late Night Radio” is reminiscent of a Travis track with the guitar type riff. Again, good drums are evident in the song along with Gray’s voice. I like the chorus of this song the most, although repetitive, the melody presents a good sound. A rather long instrumental break also creates a contrast in this song. 8.5/10

# Sell Sell Sell [5:11]

The namesake of this album “Sell Sell Sell” begins in a freaky sort of way with the sound of a clanging metal being played through-out the start whilst David sings, then suddenly, the song progresses into a more rocky type mellow track with electric guitars during the chorus whilst the verses remain more freaky with the metal clangs. After a while though, this track (lasting over 5 minutes!) can get a but annoying with the metal clanging especially through it’s still worth a listen. 7/10

# Hold On To Nothing [4:15]

“Hold On To Nothing” has a very nice and mellow acoustic guitar into which is different to the previous tracks, it is a nice relaxing track and Gray also sings more softly in keeping with the songs mood. A duet of two guitars accompany the sing
er in a nice melodic tune. The repetition of “There’s no where to write it” in the chorus can like the last track get a bit tedious. 8.5/10

# Everytime [4:41]

The guitar riffed “Everytime” is a medium tempo track. A more country influence is evident in this track thanks to the harmonica or mouth organ. I like the mouth organ in this track as it adds something different to the album. 7.5/10

# Magdalena [4:24]

The strangely titled “Magdalena” is another guitar type track. Faster tracked, this song is a nice song which would have been a good release. A nice continuous guitar riff as well as nice backing accompaniment accompanying David Gray. A strong drum beat, adds to the faster song with lalala’s near the end of the song. The harmonies sung in the chorus sung along to Grays voice provides a nice sound. A nice abrupt ending finishes the song perfectly.

# Smile [4:06]

“Smile” is one of the best tracks on this album. With bass chords accompanying Gray singing in the start makes the song moody and then as the guitar begins to play, it begins to pick up and Gray uses more dynamics in his voice creating contrast and emotion. Although a simple song, this track demonstrates Gray’s vocal talent well. This song is a moody song with good dynamics and a great guitar part. It all works well. 8.5/10

# Only The Lonely [4:46]

“Only The Lonely” also begins with a guitar part. The words in this song is what makes this track “I'm delirious with chaos I'm wonder struck with awe, in my soul I'm dreaming only of your velvet shore, when I'm walking there my face untangles like a child.” This could almost be made into a poem! 8/10

# What Am I Doing Wrong [5:01]

The happy sounding “What Am I Doing Wrong?” is a twangly track with a banjo style rhythm being played by the guitar. This t
rack has backing vocals that are sung during the chorus mostly. A good easy listening track that will spin round your mind for quite a while.This track is also a long track lasting about 5 minutes in total. 8.5/10

# Gutters Full Of Rain [4:22]

“Gutters Full Of Rain” is a kind of reflective song. “A gutter full of rain an empty picture frame a house out at the edges of the city never noticing the war til it's right there at your door and suddenly your hands are bloody” these lyrics from the first verse demonstrate its power. A slow song, this involves as well as the regular guitar voice and so on, has use of bells and has a great guitar break which presents a nice sound. 8/10

# Forever is Tomorrow is Today [5:32]

“Forever is Tomorrow is Today” although a confusing title is a good raw sounding track. Is a nice song again with great lyrics and great beats. This raw sound contrasts with the rest of the album well. “I don't want no other distractions there's too much here to see, faint hearts or jaded reactions contraptions of history” A nice melody in the guitar part makes this song worthwhile. 8/10

# Folk Song [5:15]

The final track “Folk Song” the rather mellow and echoed song is an eerie song which has a strange sounding synthed sound from something such as a keyboard going to extremes of volumes. A wind blow is evident in the background of this track and it is very relaxing in a way but the bursts of volume from the keyboard trying to add dynamics tend not to work very well as they tend to spoil the song too much.Another long track, this song can also go on too long. There is such a thing as spoiling a song in this way and Gray tends to demonstrate this to the full on occasions. 7.5/10

* Verdict.
696969696969

This album is worth a listen to and if you like other David Gray albums, then this is a must have for the coll
ection. Like I said though, some of the songs are rather long in length and tend to get annoying as well as repetitive. On the other hand though, this album demonstrates Gray’s vocal talent as well as his knack for songwriting.

Seeming that this album is old, you can probably get it cheaper but I would advise you to stay away from HMV when considering buying this one because we all know how much they charge for older albums!

Been meaning to invest in 'White Ladder' for a while. Never heard of this one (oh, I'm such a chart whore). Btw what's with the sixes and nines under your first couple of titles?
