Advantages: Great songs
Disadvantages: Quite expensive
If you only get one They Might Be Giants album, make it this one. It's a compilation of all their best known songs, most of which were recorded at live shows. Three of the tracks were recorded in studios, and only appear on this album - "Doctor Worm", "Severe Tire Damage Theme" and "About Me". There are also seven bonus tracks at the end of the album, tracks 18 to 24, which (the sleeve notes assure me) were created spontaneously, live on stage, and which are based on the 'Planet of the Apes' series of films. All of Flansburgh and Linnell's finest work is featured on the album, from the ever-popular "Birdhouse In Your Soul" to the whimsical "Spider". The songs range from throughout the band's career including "She's An Angel" from their first album, and "Till My Head Falls Off" from the most recent one. The album also includes a recording of "Why Does The Sun Shine? (The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)", which has only previously been available as a single. Ideally, I would have preferred that the songs on here weren't recordings from live shows, but the performances are still good, and there is an interesting collection of new songs on the disc! This is also the last album that They Might Be Giants released on CD, their recordings have subsequently only been released in MP3 format, only available to buy online.
