There are many artists around who deserve to be more well known than they are. In my opinion Tank is one of those artists. In a crowded market of male R&B solo singers Tank is one of the who has something different about them to the norm of singers coming through in the last few years like Bobby Valentino, Chris Brown amongst other more established and talented singers like Usher, Tyrese, R Kelly and Brian McKnight.
Tank was born Durrell Babbs on January 1, 1976 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His artist name comes from his strong pyhsique which he has had since his days as a talented High School sports star. He chose music over a possible American Football College career and released his first album in 2001 entitled Force of Nature Which included the hits Maybe I Deserve and Freaky. He has since released two other albums and recorded with a number of well known artists including Kelly Rowland and Snoop Dogg most recently aswell as forming his own supergroup with Tyrese and Ginuwine, they are known as TGT.
**Sex, Love & Pain**
Sex, Love & Pain is his third release to date and was released in 2007. The album debuted at Number Two in the Billboard charts after selling 103,000 copies in its first week. Tank produced the album with a few well known producers in the form of The Underdogs, Timbaland and Sean Garrett. Sex, Love & Pain is the first Tank album to be given a Parental Advisory sticker for it's explicit lyrical content.
This is a great opening track which tells the story of a true love when you both share your best and worst moments with each other and have a relationship that is based on trust. Tank provides ample evidence of the quality of his voice with a superbly flowing vocal performance.
2.) I'm Coming Home
This is one of the more old school sounding tracks on the album, It has a 90's R&B/Hip Hop vibe and is one of the shorter tracks on the album. Not the best but a decent enough track.
3.) My Body
This is a fantastic mellow ballad which showcases the tenderness in his voice. It also shows the range of his voice and music as it is quite different to much of the album which has a quicker pace both musically and vocally.
4.) Please Don't Go
This is one of his most played hits with regular radio airplay in the US. It's a tender ballad about trying to keep a relationship going when it looks like it is over and your partner is going to leave you.
5.) I Hate U
This track is about how the feelings can change for someone when they hurt you. This is a great track with a fantastic thumping beat and some gentle keyboard tones which work well together. You will notice how well his voice moves through the lyrics almost effortlessly.
This track really showcases the flow of his vocal ability. A gentle ballad with some nice backing vocals and a great emotive subject which is about someone breaking your heart ending the relationship. Great track.
7.) Who Dat
This is an interesting track about your partner having all these nice clothes and perfumes etc but not having the money and you are asking who is giving her all these gifts. A great track which has a very good flow.
This is a great track about when you are in the mood in the bedroom. It's about pleasing your partner in the bedroom department and is a great track for a romantic night in with that special someone.
9.) Wedding Song
This as you can imagine is about wanting to get married to the one you love. His voice is on form again and this is one of the best tracks on Sex, Love & Pain. A smooth gentle ballad that works really well.
10.) My Heart
This is an outstanding song which is one of his best, A heartfelt tale of his partner walking out on him and the emotions you go through when something like that happens. This song goes from denial to when it finally sinks in that they have gone.
11.) I Love U
This is probably one of the weaker tracks on the album, It has a nice catchy uptempo feel but doesnt have the spark that seperates the rest of the album from this one. Decent enough track though.
12.) I Love Them Girls [Timbaland Remix]
This is a fantastic track with Tank sounding like a modern day Marvin Gaye amongst a hip hop beat provided by Timbaland, This works extremely well and is a great end to the album.
Sex, Love & Pain is a very impressive album from Tank and he deserves to have more recognition than he does at this point. Whilst you may not have heard of him his albums are a great addition to any R&B fans collection. Tank has A voice that is gentle when it needs to be and out there when it needs to be.
