Advantages: Booming vocals to match the strong messages

Disadvantages: Well, it's death metal so there are limits to how much you can listen to and who likes it!

Shadows in the Light is the latest album (number 7) by stalwarts of the Death Metal scene - Immolation. Naturally, Immolation's music isn't really going to appeal to people outside of the extreme metal listening circles but I still feel this band which were an integral part of the New York death metal scene in the very early 90s are pretty under-rated.

Shadows in the Light is not quite the booming brutality you may have found on their album "Harnessing Ruin" but it's faster and more in your face, the drumming is relentless and their is nearly always nice melody cleverly hidden in the background which you may not notice first off. Vocally the band stick with the deep growls of Ross Dolan who doesn't falter into a scream or anything more high pitch than a "I'm a very angry Barry White" sound.

Immolation used to focus on anti-christian stuff but have recently moved in to other topics like politics, personally I'm not particularly interested in the lyrics a great deal as it's nothing unique and what you come to expect from a fair few bands in this genre. My favourite track on this album however has to be Passion Kill, its got a pretty strong message and combined with the tempo of the track - it's a force to be reckned with.

The album is about as good an example of death metal you are likely to find over the last few years, technically amazing yet still full of passion.

1. "Hate's Plague" - 2:50
2. "Passion Kill" - 3:41
3. "World Agony" - 3:56
4. "Tarnished" - 3:36
5. "The Weight of Devotion" - 4:21
6. "Breathing the Dark" - 4:00
7. "Deliverer of Evil" - 3:45
8. "Shadows in the Light" - 3:44
9. "Lying with Demons" - 4:33
10. "Whispering Death" - 6:04

Summary: As good as death metal gets these days
