The Top - The Cure
by DanielKemp - written on 10/05/09 (Very useful, 83 readings)
Rating:
verses in a most maniacal fashion, while the organ playing is so mad that I almost want to dance to it. The Top would be the last album in The Cure s catalogue in which the title-track would close the LP, until Bloodflowers in 2000. The simplicity of the track certainly recalls the band s early efforts, particularly Faith. It actually brings the album to a close in a really fine way, with the precision played guitar work generating an uneasy atmosphere. The Top sounds just as you d expect the Cure to sound after the flurry of singles they had released and which were collected on Japanese Whispers. The underlying feeling when listening to The Top is that Robert Smith ...

The Top - The Cure

Rating:
After reaching a peak with the delightfully dismal Pornography, it seemed the only way for The Cure to go was up towards a more positive outlook, and greater commercial success. The departure of bass player Simon Gallup left Robert Smith effectively writing and recording on his own, and with only the addition of Lol Tolhurst s keyboards and the session drums of Steve Goulding, this is essentially a Robert Smith solo album disguised under the Cure name. Fortunately, unlike other semi-solo albums in the past, most notably the Pink Floyd works hijacked by Roger Waters, this has nothing of the indulgent ego project about it, and genuinely sounds a lot more accessible than ...

Japanese Whispers - The Cure
by Frankingsteins - written on 16/06/08 (Useful, 25 readings)
Rating:
was a practical way of collecting material from the three singles Let s Go to Bed, The Walk and The Lovecats released by The Cure between 1982 and 1983, back when singles tended to be kept separate from full-length album releases. Not considered a proper album by the band and others, it still stands strong against the competition, mainly failing due to its disappointing length of just under half an hour. As these are singles intended to reach a wider audience, Robert Smith s typical gloominess and introspection is largely absent here, replaced with overt catchiness that s perhaps more enjoyable, certainly in the case of the irresistible The Lovecats which has ...
