This guy is probably not for you at all, his subject matter is very edgy and at times questionable. If you like Bill Burr/Bill Hicks or anyone of taht vein then you will probably like Stanhope.
He soon gets on to the topic of his now-deceased mother who at the time had just come to stay with him in LA. He actually called from th stage in the live show I saw.
He laments her habit of wasting all his money on scratchcards and her harem of pets before moving on to the topic of seedy motels, since he is a road comic...more |

Doug Stanhope is an edgy comic from Massacheusetts who has a number of DVDs on the market. One of which I have already reviewed previously. He is very controversial and is no stranger to chasing controversy and frequently offends his patrons. I saw him live in Manchester a few months ago and he was hilarious, although I can't remeber most of what he said as I was just in awe of being in the same room, giggling away to myself. To give you a taste of what he's like, here's the first joke from the show... 'I blew a speaker in my car today... yeah... he was a motivational speaker. Raw and disturbing atmosphere, great selection of voice samples. 
Deliberately poor production is an issue. Interesting use of obscure instruments, effective gothic atmosphere. Seems amateurish by comparison to later works in the genre. Dingy atmosphere. So boring.
