... later tracks are moody yet they still carry the same energy as the earlier ones. The recording of Silent Alarm is so crisp and poslished yet the band is not made to sound too commercial. The sounds still have the raw energy of a newly formed band who are excited about their music. The drumming as usual is top notch. The guitar riffs are simple but the complexity of the way they fit together is and inspiring feat. I sometimes wonder what Bloc Party would be like now if they had kept writing music like this rather than ...more

Crowned Review Silent Alarm - Bloc Party: I Can't Sleep, I Can't Dream (1230 words)

Rating:

'Silent Alarm' is Bloc Party's debut studio release and was released through Wichita Records in early 2005. It's a thirteen track album of indie rock and the run time of this album release from the band is just over 50 minutes. Before I opted to give this album a listen I remember that there was a lot of hype surrounding this release, Bloc Party's 'Silent Alarm' album was one which was loved by many when it was released; the album also has its haters and I guess you could say that this debut release from Bloc Party is a bit of a Marmite album in that you'll probably either love it or you hate it. Personally, I find the album really quite average. The tracks are pretty ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Are You Hoping For A Miracle? (822 words)

For all the bands I’ve seen at Reading Festival there is the odd band that have slipped by that I’ve considered seeing but decided not to. Only to find 6 months later that I actually would have quite liked to see them. Bloc Party are one such band. They appeared at the festival last year but for one reason or another we didn’t make it to see them. Following the release of their debut album, Silent Alarm, we went to see them at Reading this year and it totally blew us away. The band from North London formed back in 1998 when guitarist and lead singer Kele OKereke met fellow guitarist Russell Lissack. They then placed adverts in the British music press and were ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Silent Alarm - Bloc Party: Fan Bloody Tastic! (324 words)

Rating:

It goes without saying that Bloc Party have indeed done very well. They where meant to be a cult indie band that where supposed to enjoy moderate success instead they have ranked up to date three successful albums and multi successful singles that have been played on radio and tv constantly. They have become somehow a cult favorite and enjoyed a NME nomination not so long ago. They are set to release their fourth album later on this year, a remix album of their third album Intimacy. This album is a very good, there is some original and great production on the album. Like Eating Glass is a perfect opening song and i love the roughness and live sound of the ...  Read the complete review

Bloc Party are a four piece indie band from London, consisting of Kele Okereke on vocals and guitar, Matt Tong on drums, Gordon Moakes on bass guitar and Russell Lissack playing the main guitar. The band have in total released three studio albums to date, and countless other songs on EPs and B-sides. Silent Alarm is the debut album from Bloc Party which was initially released to critical acclaim in February 2005, and was in fact judged to be NMEs album of the year. Originally consisting of 13 tracks, on later releases an extra two more tracks have been added - 'Little Thoughts' and 'Two More Years'. I personally bought this CD around the time at ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Silent Alarm - Bloc Party: Compliments (1335 words)
by - written on 12/10/05 (Very useful, 183 readings)
Rating:

I bought this album a few months ago on a friends a recommendation, gave it a listen, and like I normally do because of the fact it did not immediately strike me as my type of music (I am normally into metal) I discarded it, a few months later I decided to add it to my computer play list. It was only then when a random song came on and I was left thinking ‘who was that?’ did I begin to think that perhaps I had misjudged this band, I imagine that if you bought it you would do the same, persistence is the key here. The reason why it is so difficult to get into this album is that is something completely unique, like bands before them who have not been accepted ...  Read the complete review
