... early parts seem to have their roots in a more goth influence. Essentially, this is another stadium rock track, with the guitar to the forefront, but it's not as catchy as some of the others so far and has that dark influence that sets is apart slightly. The fourth track is my favourite, the storming pop-rock sound of "You Brought a Knife to a Gunfight", which is supposedly based on a true story. It's a slightly softer track than some of the others, with a Thunder or Motley Crue style sing along chorus and...more

Premium Review Silver Spoons And Broken Bones - Stone Gods: Worth a Silver (1811 words)
by - written on 24/12/08 (Very useful, 122 readings)
Rating:

You could never be entirely sure if The Darkness were a band you were supposed to take too seriously. The big stadium rock songs with the huge guitar solos, Justin Hawkins' falsetto and spandex meant you could never be sure if you were meant to laugh at them or if, a la Spinal Tap, they were laughing at themselves. Even the band's eventual demise' following Justin's addiction, rehab and quitting the band, was such a cliché it didn't help answer the question. The remaining members immediately announced their intention to continue making music and I expected that we'd soon be getting more of the same, as it was essentially the same band as before. Premium Review Stone Gods emerge from the flames of The Darkness (369 words)
by - written on 23/08/08 (Very useful, 55 readings)
Rating:

When The Darkness abruptly came to an end, Stone Gods emerged from the flames. Justin Hawkins had quit and the others decided they weren't going to be beaten and so Stone Gods began. Former bassist Richie Edwards took lead vocals and guitar, Dan Hawkins resumed lead guitar duties, Ed Graham continued on drums and newcomer Toby Macfarlaine took on the bass guitar. Stone Gods aren't as flamoyant as The Darkness (mainly because the flamboyant one was Justin Hawkins), but that doesn't take away from them being a damn good rock band! Silver Spoons & Broken Bones is Stone Gods' debut album, released on 7th July 2008. Prior to this, Stone Gods released ...  Read the complete review

A great new sound and approach from simply one of the best bands of our time! None- could this get any better? Okay, a couple of tracks might sound better live but still.....

More energetic and powerful metal performance than the last E.P. Less material.

Consistent, good atmosphere. Dull and samey.

More confident and focused release, boasting great variety. Inconsistent, and ballads are quite dull.

Many rock and metal favourites. Disappointingly obvious selections, and no attempt to make the sound their own.

Some more old-school heavy metal for you. It's not particularly good.
