Newest Review: ... into genuis and this compilation pulls out the real gems from this period. Stand out tracks include 'Only when I lose ... more

... myself', a beautifully haunting and pulsating track that crowned their development from 80s popsters into 90s electro-rock-trip hop megastars. Another hit is the pomp of the grungy glam rock track 'I feel you', whilst 'Enjoy the silence' is one of the best know and most beautiful electro-ballads ever created. Depeche Mode are a band that took a long time to develop and really find their feet. They could always create a catchy tune but in this period they managed to generate a real emotional intensity and epic musical sw...more

Premium Review Singles 86>98 - Depeche Mode: My Own Personal Jesus (984 words)
by - written on 13/06/01 (Very useful, 341 readings)
Rating:

Well not quite my object of worship, but this album comes close. Twenty-one songs spanning twelve years of an impressive career, Depeche Mode (DM) still stand strong throughout their ups and downs (and they've certainly had their downs). When you come across a band with a colourful history, you tend to find a lot of events in their personal lives are reflected in the music. Here it's certainly true and the songs are extremely variable which is a good thing, they're anything but boring. The album starts with ‘Stripped’ released in 1986, quite a dark song which is far fetched from the cheesy pop days of when Vince Clarke (Erasure) was ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Buy the DVD (99 words)

Rating:

If you own a DVD player you simply must buy this DVD. It has some excellent extras and is a bargain at around £11 at www.blackstar.co.uk. Featuring 21 full length videos including Little 15 which was originally released only in France, the quality of the DVD is excellent. A number of the videos are grainy but this is artistic rather than an issue of quality. Also included is an interesting interview with the band and a short film, the sound quality is great and if you are a fan this disk will get played many times, buy a copy! ...  Read the complete review

If you're a depeche mode fan then you will probably have all of the songs on this double cd compilation. To have all of those fantastic songs in one package is great though and that's exactly what you get here. As the title suggests, this is a collection of songs ranging from the album Music for the masses to their latest one, Ultra. When you look at all of these singles side by side it's a pretty impressive collection. All of their biggest hits are here, Enjoy the silence, Personal Jesus, It's no good, Never let me down again...the list goes on. Even if you're not a DM fan, this really is a great collection of music but it's a must have ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A very comprehensive collection. (271 words)
by - written on 29/09/00 (Useful, 42 readings)
Rating:

This CD is almost permanently on my CD player. It covers the hits of Depeche Mode from 1985 right up to 1998 (the Ultra album) and is very comprehensive. Not much else you can say really! The double Cd includes tracks such as Stripped, A Question of Lust and the bigger hits such as Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence and I Feel You. The style of their music has remained much the same over the years, driven by synthesisers, but their sound has always remained up to date as shown on this double CD. It is a great starting point for people who, like me, are starting to build their CD collections and can't afford to buy every single Depeche Mode album (of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Singles 86>98 - Depeche Mode: A little bit of nostalgia, depeche mode style (229 words)
by - written on 16/10/01 (Useful, 72 readings)

Firstly I have to say I feel extremely sad for saying this but everytime I listen to this CD I have to sing along. Usually to the annoyance of everyone around, but I know nearly all the words to all the songs on this Album. There said it! I must be sad! This is on of my favourite albums, not because I am a big fan of Depeche Mode but because the band have been around since my early youth. This means that as I listen to the album I can remember, albeit vaguely what I was doing at the time each song was released. So each song has a special meaning for me. I think you remember a song as a marker in your life better than a date. This album has ...  Read the complete review

Chapters From A - Falconer
Folk elements increased. Short and seemingly incomplete songs.

Falconer - Falconer
Distinctive sound. Lacks variety.

Monday Morning Apocalypse - Evergrey
More accessible to newcomers. Lacks the band's characteristic qualities.

In Search Of Truth - Evergrey
Creative and compelling prog-power metal. One too many dull ballads.

Monumension - Enslaved
Great progressive metal for those with more extreme tastes. Too much reliance on these new elements, which aren't as developed as the old.

Mardraum - Beyond The Within - Enslaved
Original and distinctive progressive black metal. Mechanical production sound is grating.

Isa - Enslaved
Holds your interest, is very cool may be slightly repetitive for some.

American Apathy - Dope
experimental instrumentals Too many lack lustre tracks

Fwx - Fates Warning
Mature, atmospheric, heavy and moving. Perhaps not dynamic enough for some prog metal fans.
