Sink or Swim is the first album from the magnificent Gaslight Anthem. This, along with Senor & The Queen and The '59 Sound is amongst the most played on my itunes as there is not a single song here I do not like. Ranging from the energetic rock of Wooderson to more relaxed acoustic numbers such as The Navesink Banks (with haunting lyrics that I recommend you read), there will, as the cliche goes, be something for everybody. If I were pushed, I would say that the best this album has to offer would be the duo of I'da Called You Woody, Joe and Angry Johnny and the Radio. I'da Called You Woody, Joe is about the late, great Joe Strummer and contains many Clash allusions. Angry Johnny and the Radio is wonderful on the album but unmissable live as they generally splice in a part of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted before coming back in for the chorus which is, quite frankly, impossible to not sing along to, especially the last line 'I don't drive nowhere without the radio on'. Personally, I don't drive anywhere without Sink or Swim on.
The debut album from the best band of our generation.
The Gaslight Anthem are a classic rock and roll band, they're the best band to come out of music in 15 years for my liking and this album was just the start.
Released in 2007 quickly became well known in the underground and was the start of the Gaslight Anthems ever increasing fame.
The rawest of the 3 albums so far but not to be forgotten, the opening track of Boomboxes and Dictionaries is a brilliant introduction from a band that will hopefully be releasing music for many years to come.
People have played up the influence of Springsteen alot, it's obvious to see but one day hopefully the Gaslight Anthem will be known in their own right as the bosses of rock and roll for thats what they are at the moment.
This album is a must, brilliant, passionate songs that people can relate to, ballads and genuinely brilliant songs fill the best debut album for a decade, this is a must for anyone.
