Advantages: Great live performance

Disadvantages: None

I have been a fan of the Foo Fighters for many years now, and was eager to get my hands on their live album 'Skin and Bones'. The band were formed by Dave Grohl, the former drummer for Nirvana, in 1995. However, Grohl is the lead singer and guitar maestro for the Foo Fighters, and the drumming seat is taken by Taylor Hawkins, the former tour drummer for Alanis Morrisette.

'Skin and Bones' was released in November 2006, and is the band's first live performance CD, featuring tracks performed on their 3 day tour of the same year. It features hits such as 'Next Year', 'My Hero' and 'Times Like These'. It also features a revamped lineup solely for the tour/album, including former Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear.

These are the tracks:

1. Razor
2. Over And Out
3. Walking After You
4. Marigold
5. My Hero
6. Next Year
7. Another Round
8. Big Me
9. Cold Day In The Sun
10. Skin And Bones
11. February Stars
12. Times Like These
13. Friend Of A Friend
14. Best Of You
15. Everlong

The last three tracks are performed as encores, and 'Everlong' is a wonderful acoustic end to such a brilliant CD of live performances. My favourite track is 'Cold Day In The Sun', which features drummer Taylor Hawkins on vocals. It is a stellar performance, as are the majority of the tracks. The clinical nature of a studio recorded CD is sometimes missing, but we are treated to a live performance from one of the best gig rock bands around at the moment. There are moments of acoustic brilliance from Grohl, and there are no weak links.

The only criticism I have is that you do not feel the full force of the Foos' power like you sometimes do on their recorded tracks, again due to the live nature of the recording.

This is an awesome album. It's in my car and my front room, and I annoy my wife constantly by playing it over and over and say 'Hey, listen to this one!' She invariably replies, 'Yes, I know it's good, you've told me before!'

I'm going to rate this as a 5 star album, because that's what I believe it to be. If you are a fan of the Foo Fighters, this one is a must. Otherwise, it is still a great album to have for the musical quality of the performers. Grohl is extremely gifted, and is finally producing some of the musical brilliance he held back when he was with Nirvana.

The album is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98 new.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds disappointing if it's not as powerful as the studio stuff, the best live albums always excel in that regard (a couple of my all-time favourite albums are live albums for that very reason).
