Advantages: a breath of fresh air
Disadvantages: not for metal heads
I have long since been a foo fighters fan, and love their rough, edgy sound. Crunching guitar, with powerful rythem are order of the day. That combined with one of the best, grittiest voices in the genre. Of course i mean dave grohl, of ex nirvana fame.
I saw this album on sale for the rediculously cheap price of £6. At first i was wary, as many bands that have tried to convert their music to acoustic only, have failed miserably. That said, i bought it, hoping that the foo's could recreate one of the best live albums of all time - Nirvana, unplugged in new york. After all. two of the foo's were part of that tour by nirvana.
I must admit, that from the first five seconds i knew that they had created a masterpiece (again!). Just to hear their songs, which usually are so strong musically, played so gently was refreshing. Old songs, sounded like new songas again. Hard to believe that songs of the foo's could sit so well along side harmonica solo's, violin, cellos etc. But the pieces have been composed incredibly well. The music flows well, and gives the foo's a whole new edge.
it was a great buy, and all of the songs were put on to my ipod, at once. Interesting on the cd to hear some of the interaction with the crowd. Grohl is a frontman of a great rock band, but he is still so humble. He has real respect for his fans, unlike so many of the modern day musicians. Perhaps it comes from his experiences in nirvana, and with being around at the time of the death of one of his greatest influences, thed late great kurt cobain (r.i.p.).
1. "Razor" - 6:48

3. "Walking After You" - 5:18
4. "Marigold" - 3:19
5. "My Hero" - 4:51
6. "Next Year" - 4:34
7. "Another Round" - 4:55
8. "Big Me" - 3:01
9. "Cold Day in the Sun" - 3:26
10. "Skin and Bones" - 4:00
11. "February Stars" - 5:51
12. "Times Like These" - 5:25
13. "Friend of a Friend" - 4:01
14. "Best of You" - 5:02
15. "Everlong" - 6:37
15 songs, over 70 minutes of music. 70 minutes that you will thoroughly enjoy. Particular highlights for me are big me, which features delightful backing singing. A truly marvelous version of marigold. But far out in the lead is a spactacular fully acoustic version of their best track to date (IMO), everlong.
Well worth the money. Can be bought for anywhere between 5 and 7 pounds, and has fast become one of my favourite albums of all time. It really is a breath of fresh air, in what had become a rather stale genre, famed for bands that churn out the same sort of stuff, over and over again. Well done to the foo's for trying something different, and pulling it off so well. If only a few other bands could do the same!
Reccomended. G.
