Wilco - Wilco

Premium Review Boring really (259 words)

Rating:

Wilco, is the 8th album is from the Chicago band Wilco . Strange name for the title of the album, but wait for it - there is also a song on the tracklist called Wilco. At least that is two things you don t have to remember. Personally though I think the album is sort of forgettable in general - it is nondescript music that fails to capture the imagination. Some of the songs in themselves aren t particularly bad and the vocals are pleasant, but thats all this could be regarded as: pleasant. None of the tracks blow your mind and the band hasn t made a style of their own - it seems as though they are 15 years too late and would have better made their debut at the time ...

A Ghost Is Born - Wilco

Premium Review Wilco - A Ghost Is Born (523 words)
by DavidJay - written on 27/08/08 (Very useful, 16 readings)
Rating:

To birth a masterpiece is rare enough - to sire another work of similar beauty, power and invention immediately after is something rarer still. Post-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco could have been forgiven for taking it easy for a time. Had they produced, say, another A.M, surely their audience would have understood. Sundering themselves and their songs helped produce one of the defining records of the noughties and a work that will, one feels fairly confident in assuming, continue to inspire and intrigue and intoxicate listeners well into the future. One ALSO feels confident, however, in assuming that said process is an exhausting, draining, demanding affair. If they fancied ...

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco

Premium Review Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (372 words)
by DavidJay - written on 27/08/08 (Very useful, 26 readings)
Rating:

A record sure to feature on a fair few Best Of The Decade lists in a couple years time, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco s masterful, intoxicating, constantly surprising fourth album (not counting the excellent Mermaid Avenue collaborations with Billy Bragg and the ghost of Woody Guthrie) is as jaw-droppingly brilliant now as it was then. A stirring, provocative mélange of alt. country, experimental pop, folk and rock, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot marks the logical progression from the boundary-pushing contents of 1999 s Summerteeth. It is simultaneously exuberant and heartbreaking. Often, it feels like a rave at a wake - one cannot help but bop along even as the lyrics claw with ...

3LW - 3LW
Too much pop

Above The Weeping World - Insomnium
Classic Gothenburg sound revisited, with a faithful and creative performance. Second half of the album runs out of ideas.

Angl - Ihsahn
Classical influences, picks up from where the last album left off. Small sounds that don't seem like to belong in place, but that's what makes the sound complete.

At The Heart Of Winter - Immortal
More developed and enjoyable sound. Guitar borrows distinctly from classic heavy metal, sounding a little out of place.

Battles In The North - Immortal
Heavy and relentless, if that's your bag. Tediously repetitive and lacking in ideas.

Blade Of Triumph - Iron Fire
Some fun heavy metal. Weak vocals and dull instruments.

Blood Sweat And No Tears - Stetsasonic
Hip-Hop & Rap - East Coast - 2003

Tribute To The Gods - Iced Earth
Many rock and metal favourites. Disappointingly obvious selections, and no attempt to make the sound their own.

Turbo - Judas Priest
Great vocals, impressive guitar work and some effective use of synthesisers. Too many bland and occasionally annoying pop-rock songs.

Unleashed In The East - Judas Priest
Impressive performance of many early Judas Priest classics. Original release is lacking in quantity, and some favourites are always going to be missing.
