Premium Review Iowa - Slipknot: I Knew Iowa Was Cold But... (1339 words)

Rating:

Taking its name from the band's home state, "Iowa" came as the second album from the Alternative Metal band SlipKnot in 2001. The band, who had a largely unchanged line-up this time when compared to what was seen with their 1999 debut, come with more hardcore Nu-Metal, and do so during the peak years of the sub-genres duration in the Alternative Metal game. 1. "(515)" (Intro) 2. "People = S**t" After a rather dark, scream-filled introduction, we have the band powering through with a raw display that is bound to excite their fans as they come out with a burst of Rap metal that is seen to be a bit of a ...  Read the complete review

For years, common perception of the American State of Iowa meant little more than a lot of big fields of wheat. All too long thought of as the epitome of small-town America (until recently, one of its main claims to fame was playing home to none other than Smallville, quiet little hometown of Christopher Reeves' Superman), it was left until 1995 for nine rebellious young men, filled with aggression that "shit happens", to formulate, at the back of a garage in Des Moines, an alternative heavy-metal band with image strong enough to reverse all those years of "farm boy" prejudice. Mortals with faces hidden behind bizarre masks and assigned ...  Read the complete review

Slipknot – IOWA This album has to be one of the most eagerly awaited albums of this year. Now I have just gone out and bought this album because I’m a huge slipknot fan and I got the silver version (where as the normal one has a white cover this has a shiny silver cover and back) and after listening to it a couple of times I thought I would write a review on it, so the rest of you can see what its like if you don’t what to buy the album or just don’t know weather to get it or not. This album is not what you are expecting, whatever you were expecting, it is a lot heavier than Slipknot – Slipknot, but I think they are turning ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Year of the Goat (1742 words)

Rating:

Iowa is, in the world of nu-metal, probably the most anticipated album of the entire year. Slipknot’s second, self-titled album, released in 1999 was a huge success and an important moment in rock history. This is not because of Slipknot’s apparently shocking stage behaviour, involving the smelling of decomposing birds to induce vomiting, the punching of their own fans, the coin toss to decide whether the clown mask or the gas mask gets a punch in the face, having more fights with each other than the Gallaghers etc. Slipknot’s live shows are like a circus to behold, only with more headbanging, fighting and faeces throwing, but they sound absolutely ...  Read the complete review

This album has to be the most eagerly awaited albums of 2001 the follow up to the mighty self titled album of 1999 – 2000. Now I actually own this album and have listened to it a fair amount, well quite a lot! At the start I though that this album was not that good, but now the caricature of the songs are building on me and I am beginning to like the album a lot, I don’t think that it has so much put into it as Slipknot – Slipknot because it does just not feel as soulful as before, the songs don’t feel they are about anything special, there’s no track like Prosthetics, that is all slow and builds up, it is just all mainly heavy. Here are the ...  Read the complete review

great sounding, love them!, good album maybe too heavy for some

Great variation of sounds and styles, musicianship, Mike Patton's voice the 'throat', too much distortion in the guitars

Mailny great The last one!

Great pagan atmosphere. Poor production spoils effect of instruments.

Creative and distinctive fusion of metal and symphony. Acted interludes are unnecessary and distracting.

An excellent rock album, fantastic from start to finish. Some may be put off by the musical change in direction that Avenged Sevenfold took here.
