Advantages: works on it's own terms
Disadvantages: Mark Knopfler
Dylan finding God? It might seem unlikely, but it was true in 1979. Didn't he once sing 'don't follow leaders, watch your parking meters'?, well he had a change of heart & started knocking off religiously tinged albums with vengeful enthusiasm.
This marked the start of Dylan's religious interest, & the results are clearly displayed, the message being that Dylan had found faith. Some herald this as a masterpiece, the reality is somewhere shorter, yet it's still a solid enough album.
The slick production & Mark Knopfler contributed guitar parts may not be to all tastes, but the overall feeling is one of modest success. The album works well on it's own terms & is worthwhile for those interested in this period of his career.
'Gotta Serve Somebody' is the best known track here, & while not among his best, it is a long way from his worst. The nature of this album may have alienated many of his fans, but 30 years later, this stands as the high water mark of his religious period.
Summary: Dylan finds God

- 04/07/09 I love Precious Angel and When He Returns (and I'm not in the slightest religious), but I'm not keen on the rest of the album. |

- 16/06/09 I actually quite like Knopfler's guitar parts on this album. They definitely give Dylan a new edge - one of the better albums in my opinion. |
