Advantages: Wayne Coyne's voice, The tunes
Disadvantages: Wayne Coyne's voice, your hi-fi isn't broken
There are a bundle of great bands that you never hear on the wireless, and the greatest of them all is Flaming Lips. They remain a truly unique fusion of Punk, Progressive, Folk and Rock. Wayne Coyne's voice, or lack of it, is the cornerstone of what makes this band great. He genuinely cannot sing, and that's his greatness. I have seen them live twice (both times without a drummer) and Coyne usually takes the first two bars to get anywhere near the right key, and regularly never manages it. But their songs cover aspects of life no other band would look at. How about two scientists racing for a prize? How about the weight of the sun (A spoonful weighs a ton). Then there's a mention of the Macy's Day Parade and putting the vegetables away after a trip to the market. The lyrics are unique, the fuzzed up drums are a trade mark and the tunes are magnificent. Coyne's voice swoops and hovers above the layers of sound and it's very fragility seems to take the songs to new places. There isn't a bad track on this album. It goes with me to the desert island. One of the reasons is that I return to this album regularly and always find something new. The last time, I took a hard listen to a track called 'Feeling Yourself Disintegrate', It shook me up. Oh, and by the way...when you first play The Soft Bulletin, don't worry, your Hi-Fi is just fine, it's just being tested out by an album that explores every corner of the MegaHertz scale.

- 17/05/01 Hulahoop,
Music is such a personal thing, and I don't think it's possible to be objective about it, like you can with a car or a hi-fi system. A lot of the opinions I've read on DooYoo have plagiarised Q or Mojo reviews, which I think is cheating and less than helpful. There is so much to say about the Flaming Lips, I will try my level best to add more to the review. On the subject of the missing drummer at their gigs, couldn't we have a quiz? |

- 16/05/01 This op is good as far is it goes but it probably needs a bit more. I love this album to bits, and the Flaming Lips are sooo good! Have you got any of their other albums? There are a few I'd recommend.
You could write in your op about WHY there was no drummer at their gigs - I think that's a pretty interesting novelty that people don't always know about. |
