When I Iggy Pop began touring for his first solo album title The Idiot many critics criticized him for being a mere puppet for the artistic whims of a certain Davy Jones. Whether or not this is the case or not this is a seminal album and proved to be the inspiration for countless bands over the next 25 years. A complete departure from his earlier work with the stooges (and indeed his last collaboration with Bowie Raw Power ) The Idiot incorporates a cold metallic European sound which is obviously indebted to bands like Krafftwerk and the Walker Brothers (with their album Nite Flights ). Sadly it doesn t have the plethora of bonus and unreleased bits and pieces that I had mistakenly thought it had, but it s a nice set for me to keep hold of regardless. Iggy s done some good stuff, but for me he just misses the mark - the slight punk edge isn t my bag which is a shame, although his era with Ziggy was never going to go unnoticed! Indeed, some of his greatest hits included on the album, namely Sister Midnight and the amazing China Girl have been covered by Bowie (the former as a live rendition on the Reality tour). As well as ...
