Advantages: insight into the early years of legendary Goth band the Sisters of Mercy.

Disadvantages: some recordings aren't as good as later stuff.

'Some Girls Wander By Mistake' is a glimpse into the early years of future Goth-rock( or, as Eldritch calls it, the G word) legends the Sisters of Mercy, all the way from Eldritch and Marx's bizzarely sub-par Pere-Ubu/Fall amalgamation 'Damage Done/Watch' single to the gorgeous disco-esque poundings of the classic 'Alice' and 'Anaconda'. The title comes from the line in a Leonard Cohen song which the Sisters simply butchered in feedback and mechanical pounding during their very first gig. 'Some Girls Wander...' is flawed in many ways, but shows the band in a very naive , innocent light which they would never find again in the future break-ups, lawsuits and bad blood between various parties. It kicks off with 'Alice' a goth dancefloor classic with figurative guitar all over the place. 'Floorshow' is another great song, and also the wonderful 'Phantom' instrumental an almost native american-sounding exercise courtesy of Doktor Avalanche. '1969' is less impressive but decent. The 'Reptile House EP' is next- the sublime 'Valentine' speaks about the indignities of media and war, sprinkled with that lovely cynical irony the Sisters were notorious for. 'Lights' and 'Fix' are highlights on an EP which has more in common with the slow, trancelike industrial coldwave dance Eldritch would pioneer later after the Sisters' demise with LPs such as 'Floodland' and the Sisterhood album 'Gift'. 'Temple of Love' pummells and races like its pumped full of angel dust and the superior 'hEARTLand' tempts and twists with elegance. 'Gimme Shelter' is next and was a standard track during early Sisters shows. 'Adrenochrome' and 'Body Electric' are really the first official Sisters of Mercy singles as an actually band is playing. 'Anachonda' is disco on speed. Naively classic and original tracks by the Leeds boys. While
its not the best introduction to the group( check out 'Floodland' or 'First and Last and Always' before definitely), it IS COOL.
