Advantages: It IS worth a listen. You might like.
Disadvantages: Production is shabby, although suits the style.
Never heard of 'The Sisters'?
Think goth! No not emo! Goth! Proper '80s goth.
Its all black cowboy hats, long black velvet coats and dry ice.
Well that was the glamorous side of it.
Listen to these songs and think beatnik and speed-freek.
The songs on this album, MUST have been born in the sixties.
They are lyrically dark and drip of bedsit, so do the sounds they make.
Doktor Avalanche provides drums noises, not technical expertise. you get on some songs the rhythm section of a kids toy, on other songs this rhythm section thunders at you. I happen to like drum machines - I also happen to like real drums. Doktor Avalanche does the job perfectly here.
The guitars are a celtic blend of effect pedals all plinky plonky and sixties one minute - all bagpipey and Big Country the next.
The bass does what bass guitars do. It also tries to do what lead guitars do. There really IS a place in pop-rock for a distorted bass guitar. (Yes kiddies, don't kid yourself this is STILL pop music, except it tries to be intellectual).
You can't deny the vocals on this are great. even if in places there is a little trickery going on. For a diminutive guy, the singer Andrew Eldritch has a deep, though not necessarily big voice.
I used to like this stuff. I have my adult ears on now and, well, hmmm, ummm. I will pop it on the CD now and again.
It is all deep and dark, though not all necessarily gloomy. Rock out now and again. Feel a little impressed and depressed all at once.
There is a generation of young people out there who NEED to listen to this though, even if it is definitely not my thing anymore, and I no longer hear any listening value in it. It is still worth 5 stars though, its just not for me today.
I met a guy who went by the name of James Ray once. He told me how Andrew Eldritch (that is the singer of The Sisters of Mercy) does business. With that in mind, I wouldn't recommend spending £20+ on this.
Summary: Too dark. OK at the time and you had to be there.
