Advantages: Sounds new & fresh, Catchy songs, lively
Disadvantages: A few misses scattered through the album, but made up for by other tracks
The Alps are the first ever band or artist to raise £15,000 finance to record and release their album, through innovative new musical finance website Slicethepie.com. The Alps went through Slicethepie's selection process whereby scouts who review and rate the songs leave tips for who they think are the most likely to succeed. Out of all the artists that made it through to the showcase, The Alps were voted for the most.
With their money they managed to get the album, Something I Might Regret, produced by Dave Allen who has also produced records for the likes of Depeche Mode and The Cure. The album is now currently available from all good digital retailers aswell as in physical cd format, distributed by The Alps own record label.
The Alps have a fresh new sound and style to their music, very similar to Franz Ferdinand though a little more subtle on the punky side of things. Made up of original catchy guitar riffs and lively drum beats, the album is enjoyable enough to listen to.
The first two tracks on the album, Something I Might Regret and Not So Laughable Now, are very catchy and memorable songs which seem to play themselves back in your head later on in the day. I have to admit that tracks three and four, World At War and Obstacle Race, just don't stand up to the first two and appear to be a bit more average. On to track five the energy and fresh new sound of the first two songs comes springing back alive on Curriculum Vitae, probably the best song on the album. Very melodic and catchy indeed, though with cliched lyrics about not wanting to waste your life away working in a job you don't like. The last few tracks on the album are admittedly a little disappointing after such a great start, moving back to the average sound of tracks three and four.
Taking into consideration that this is their debut album and that they have managed to release it independently whilst hanging on to their own copyright, it may not be a number one album, but it's something new which is fairly enjoyable and will also be the classic first ever album to come from Slicethepie.
After The Alps reached finance on Slicethepie, fifteen thousand contracts in the album were issued to investors. These contracts are now tradable on the Slicethepie exchange - the worlds only music stock exchange. After two years of sales these contracts pay out £1 per ten thousand albums sold each plus 10p per one thousand singles sold. Contracts in The Alps are at an all time low cost at the time of writing this review, approximately 67p.
Summary: Not the best album in the world but fresh, new and entertaining
