Advantages: Amazing music
Disadvantages: You have to buy it, its not free
I’m a huge Madonna fan although I am not so keen on her past two albums. I believe that this should have been where she stopped recording cause this would have been a beautiful finish to an amazing career. Something to Remember is basically Greatest Hits Part Two because she released The Immaculate Collection in 1990. The Album has music ranging from her Like a Virgin Album to new material of 1995. All the songs are ballads so if you are up for a fast beat album of Madonna’s worth giving this a miss. The album itself is ___minutes long and features 14 tracks although two of those tracks are the same but one is a remix (I want you, featuring Massive Attack and an Orchestral version). My favourite tracks of the album are I’ll Remember, This Used to Be My Playground, Live To Tell, Rain and Oh Father. However I do like every song. Analysis of Each Song ‘I want you’ is a love song about an ex partner. It talks about her feels for them still and how she would like them back but not just out of pity. It is a very sad song and lasts for a whole 6 minutes and 24 seconds. It also features the singer of Massive Attack on the backing vocals. ‘Ill Remember’ is a beautiful song featuring some of Madonna’s finest lyrics… I quote ‘Inside I was a child who could not meant a broken wing Outside I looked for a way to teach my heart to sing’ It is a song about how a person has changed her life and she will never forget them and what they have done for her. It is featured as well on the soundtrack of the motion picture ‘With Honours’. The actual song is 4 minutes 23 seconds, which is a reasonable length for the track, and I personally believe this to be the best song on the album if not her best overall song of her 18 years in the music industry. ‘Take A Bow’ is off of the ‘Bedtime Stories’ Album
and as I see it is tied in with ‘You’ll see’. This is only an assumption but if you see the videos to both they start the same people in the same places. The song is about a love story, which is only pretence. Madonna loves the person but feels they are only acting like they are on a stage and perhaps should ‘say goodbye’. The track is quite long reaching 5minutes and 21 seconds although it does not drag. It also features vocals of the co writer baby face. ‘You’ll See’ is about the end of a relationship and how people still cling on and hope that they will come back to them. The positive up beat shows that Madonna has not regretted her decision and the person will one day thank her. It lasts for 4 minutes and 41 seconds, which I believe, is a bit long for this song although it is a very good quality song musically and lyrically. ‘Crazy for you’ is one of the oldest songs on the album. It is from the 1985 film Vision Quest that Madonna had a small role as a singer in. It is a love song about a stranger she is in love with and who she makes love to. The song lasts for 4 minutes and 4 seconds. It is also featured on The Immaculate Collection. ‘This Used To Be My Playground’ if taken from the movie soundtrack of ‘A League of Their Own’ which Madonna also stars in along with actor Tom Hanks. It is about memories and how they can be shattered. Madonna talks about how she has been told to let go of the past and how she refuses to. This could be referring to the death of her mother when she was a child. It lasts for 5 minutes and 10 seconds and could have been much longer without dragging. It is a wonderful song, which I personally could listen to over and over again. ‘Live To Tell’ is taken off the True Blue album of 1986 and also is off the soundtrack of Madonna’s of ex-husband Sean Penn although I do not know the name of the film off
hand. It is about making mistakes and being blinded by love. It is a very sad mellow song, which any person who has been used or has had a broken heart can relate to. It lasts for 5 minutes and 52 seconds which some of it could have been cut out from the instrumental part of the song. The song is also featured on The Immaculate Collection. ‘Love Don’t Live Here Any More’ was Madonna’s first cover she made and is taken off the Like a Virgin album although it was only released as a single when she put it on this album. I personally prefer the original version of the song but then I am not a fan of people covering songs. Madonna’s voice does not suit the song and her tone is also wrong. You can hear he struggling through the song. It’s a shame as it is a downfall of a really good album. It lasts for 4 minutes and 52 seconds and I’m glad to say that it’s not a second to long. It really shouldn’t be on this album. ‘Something to remember’ is taken off ‘I’m Breathless’, which is inspired by the film Dick Tracy although the song is not featured in the film itself. It is a love song to a lover about the end of their relationship and how she will always remember them. Its not one of her best songs ever but she’s had worse. It’s worth a listen or who but I would rather skip it and listen to another song on the album. It’s a bit to repetitive for my liking. The song lasts for 5 minutes and four seconds and could easily have been cut down to spare us from boredom. ‘Forbidden Love’ just like a ‘Take a Bow’ features baby face and is off ‘Bedtime Stories’. It’s a really good catchy song about a love affair, which she can’t have but still does. I’m guessing by this it is talking about an affair. It gives the impression that she is not satisfied with what she has and wants what she can’t have. Lik
e the saying goes, ‘The grass is greener on the other side’. It lasts for 4 minutes and 9 seconds, which is a good length. It’s neither too long or too short, just right!! ‘One More Chance’ is about just like the title says having another go at a relationship. It talks about how she took a person for granted and didn’t see their break up coming and now its happened she regrets she didn’t make the effort when she could of to save what she had. It is dull song but has some good songs. With a little jazzing up it could be a really good song but at the moment its good for a cry if you’ve just been hurt by a lover. It lasts for 4 minutes and 28 seconds, which is bit long but then we can’t have everything. ‘Rain’ is featured on the album ‘Erotica’, which was made in 1992. It’s a beautiful song and just like standing in the rain makes you feel refreshed and relaxed. Its 5 minutes and 29 seconds, which doesn’t seem that long when you actually listen to the song. It’s a work of art this song but it would lose its golden sparkle if she did more songs like this. Its one of the best songs she’s made, well I believe it is. ‘Oh Father’ is one of Madonna’s most deep songs. It’s about the relationship she has with her father. About how at the time she didn’t like him but she understands him now. It’s done in the form of a plea as if to ask God for guidance in her life. It’s a beautiful song and comes off of her ‘Like a Prayer’ Album made in 1989 and lasts for 4 minutes and 59 seconds. It finishes again with ‘I Want You’. I’d like to finally say about this album that it is in all very good but then what do you expect for a greatest hits of an artist such as Madonna. Its well worth a listen and is suitable for everyone, not just Madonna fans.

- 31/07/01 This really does have all her best stuff on it (well, all the best ballads anyway). I've been meaning to invest in this for ages - your review has given me a kick up the backside...One thing - you've left a blank where you say how many minutes long it is. Sorry to be a pedant :) |
