Turnstiles - Billy Joel

Premium Review Joel's Often Overlooked Masterpiece (1381 words)
by Robin_Hod12 - written on 20/02/09 (Very useful, 74 readings)
Rating:

Turnstiles is Joel s fourth studio effort and finds him at his peak in terms of song writing, just before the release of his landmark The Stranger. But as with most of his work, this is not the same in terms of feel as his next album, with Joel taking more of a hands-on approach for this album, choosing his own instrumentalists and producing it himself, thus giving him freedom in the studio for his own vision. After life in LA, Joel was becoming restless with the music scene, as seen in some of the songs on the album, notably Say Goodbye to Hollywood, and he decided to up sticks to New York. He originally recorded this with some of Elton John s entourage, but was ...

Piano Man - Billy Joel

Premium Review The Album That Provided The Eternal Piano Man Nickname (1445 words)
by Robin_Hod12 - written on 23/02/09 (Very useful, 194 readings)
Rating:

signature song for Joel, that any true glint of stardom could be seen, but many of the tracks still remain concert favourites, and as such should be heard by any Billy Joel fan to see where it all began. 1. Travelling Prayer This is the first example of a Wild West influence, coming in through the music, which is upbeat and almost march like, as Joel quickly recites the lyrics to this little tune. The song itself is simply a prayer of hope that his lover will be safe when staying away from him, owing itself to that of a love song of sorts, although the music would suggest crosswise. The banjo makes this more of a hoe down track, but it is a statement of intent from ...

River Of Dreams - Billy Joel

Premium Review A rockier side to the piano man (298 words)
by dangaroo - written on 07/08/09 (Useful, 23 readings)

As a child, I used to catch quite a lot of early Billy Joel on a particular radio channel that used to play "Golden Oldies" but I wasn t aware of too much of his work afterwards. This album turned up in my house as part of a bulk order that I was to split up and resell, I decided to give it a listen and I m glad I did. Released in 1993, I remember the title track doing pretty well in the charts and just about everyone surely knows it "In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep" etc.. and whilst that song is an undoubted winner when it comes to pop, this album is also filled with a variety of songs that are pleasantly accompanied by his ...

Range of subject matter and musical styles. Too clean sounding for some.

Live, Fun, Great Listening (advice - play LOUD) Doesn't feature Polcie classics and not one to relax to or for when you have a headache.

Title track is excellent, three-piece is incredibly tight. Second half becomes repetitive.

Good songs None

Awesome voice, nice lyrics, good music Some tracks may seem a bit slow

Voice, lyrics, A couple of weaker links
