... utterly brilliant 'The Sound of Perseverance.' Tragically, this would also prove to be the final Death album, as Schuldiner died of brain stem cancer in 2001. This was the first Death album I heard (also one of my first death metal albums), and it still blows me away today. Following the success of 1995's 'Symbolic,' there seemed to be no higher pinnacle Chuck Schuldiner could reach with Death, which may be the reason he formed the side project Control Denied to concentrate on a lighter style of music away from the death metal genre he was so integral in pioneering.
